California - Northern

Laura, if you find a drop near us, would you please let me know. I have a neighbor who might be interested as well. Thought I might be able to start a new drop, but read through the info at the Azure site and found that I am not situated properly (too far from freeway, no storage, no turn around for truck, total fail!).

Thanks!
Lynda

i haven't called yet, but from your description, my place won't work either (same problems you have) -- i think i will stick with Bar-Ale (from Frizelle, or Rivertown Feeds in Petaluma), as they are non-soy, and the grains are all grown in the northern Sacto valley, so everything's being produced relatively locally.

in my poking around on-line this morning (procrastinating about getting writing done), i found this website, which is pretty interesting -- a bit out of date, but all discussions of chicken feed issues in sonoma/marin counties:

Hopefully there's already a drop locally that we can join. The article was interesting. I like the idea of growing duckweed. Great idea for the summer when everything is dry and brown.

I quickly got through the Duckweek article and spent a bunch of time checking out the grub digester...Chiqita, where does Mario get his soldier fly larvae? The place with the digester is out of them
We have them, but they are not breeding atm, just hanging out as larvae. we " got" them by putting out the box for them to lay in, they were already here just not enough of them to convince the flies to piss off.

When its warm enough to have them outside again we can share eggs and larvae.

duckweed is great! but don't get it if you have turkeys or actual ducks, they eat it faster then it reproduces. And will go to great lenghts to get to it!

Quote: That sounds great! I will get that digester before then.

My oldest DD will be very impressed with me--she thinks I do not recycle enough

Wait until she sees what I put into that digester and what comes out of it in 2 days....

I picked up some natural layer today from Western Pet and Feed. They do need more protein, Calcium and etc. to lay eggs. You can cut with a whole grain. I have 45 pounds of wheat feed coming from Azure Standard on Monday.

I don't give mine scratch because Australorps are prone to fatty liver disease, so they should not have too many simple carbs. I don't give them white rice either. I had one Australorp die from a ruptured liver in Oct. of 2011.

I collected 7 eggs form 12 layers today. It was a good egg day for me. Of course the 12 have lights...
