How did the chicken processing go?

All 10 of mine were feed store hatchery chicks. One each of BR, BO, SLW, Australorp, Welsummer, gold sex link, New Hampshire, White Leghorn (was sold as Delaware), and 2 EEs (one turned out roo ).  I got them for eggs and pets, and I doubt I will ever have the guts to kill one, even though I think it is better than what the store bought chickens go through. It's been fun watching the different personalities emerge, and so far the BR and the leghorn are the most personable.

My favorites are the EE/Ameraucanas.  I raised 3 hens about 20 years ago (back when the feed stores sold them as Araucana) and they were great. Especially enjoyed the colored eggs.

By the way, how did the processing session go?  I've see it done many times, but am too wimpy to administer the death blow. Probably just never been hungry enough!!  Although now that my little roo has begun crowing, starting at 4am!...  Well no, I'm going to try to find him a home. (Although if someone else wants to eat him, that's ok.)

SOOOOOO awesome!!!

I just tasted the meat & I can't believe I thought I knew what chicken was lol... This is amazing!

The process was way easier than I thought it would be & I had both birds done & in the cooler in less that 30 min... not bad for a first kill?

I found yokes in both: I knew I pulled them for a reason... I thought they were slowing down because of age but neither were laying... glad I did it when I did.

I cooked the two I slaughtered tonight & am making chicken salad in the morning to share @ a family BBQ (after I go to goat class in the morning & finish grocery shopping... someday I will stop buying food from stores all together). I can't wait for our Farmer's Market to get going again... two more weeks I think.

I just have to say, yesterday was crazy: we had a roaring forest fire across the bottom road from us & I had to pack up my kids & get off the hill (everything is put out now & we are home)

but all I could think about was dropping the kids off in town & getting back to the house for the chickens... the ones still alive & the two in the cooler! I almost lost everything... super crazy day but a beautiful sunset full of gratitude at the end of it all... Enjoy the picks!

OH! And after putting the new pullets in the other night, I went out & got my first blue egg the next morning!

(The color isn't great in the pic; that egg was way bluer than it looks there...) Everyone is doing great!

Glad you had a good experience.  My husband's grandmother was from China and used to visit his family in Ukiah.  She would complain loudly (in Chinese ) about the chicken from the supermarket. Said it had no flavor at all and did not like to eat it.  You would have agreed with her, I think!  You said the hens had yolks but had stopped laying eggs. Would that have caused health problems for them or is it an issue of not wasting feed on nonproductive hens? (which I understand completely)

Congrats on the blue egg.  I'm still waiting for my first eggs. Probably next month. Very glad you were not involved too much with that fire. I grew up in a hilly rural area and we were always vigilant about fire danger, especially because of the livestock. Still can't smell woodsmoke during the summer without my blood pressure going up!  This weekend is supposed to high risk in N.CA, red flag warnings.  Take care.

The ducks did that too. Just pass out and look like drunkards after a hard night at the bar. hehe 

The chicks are cracking me up. When one of them thinks they found something it good- it runs around. Which causes ALL of them to think that one chick has something and they all chase her. So funny. They've even done it with a wood chip. Someone else will nab it and take off and thus the race begins again. :P Chicken games! haha

Actually the mommy of the broody went un-broody over some OEGB eggs we put under her, laid her own secret nest, and hatched that broody on accident... at least it was a pullet!
