Don't forget about your wild turkey step-birds! (Awesome pics, by the way!) Although better to leave them to themselves. They will destroy a garden and fruit trees in no time.

 

Love the goslings! What kind are they? Some friends had Toulouse geese that were beautiful and excellent watch "dogs"!  Nothing got on that property without loud alarm honks!

I have 2 English Orpington hens, which are extra poofy in feathering.  We get temps up to 115 in summer here (usually just for a week or so) and I've never lost any bird to the heat. (also knocks on wood)  Just make sure they have plenty of water and shade.

 

This is the small one.  My son has dubbed them "The Fat Girls".

It's good to hear about good experiences with Orpingtons and heat here. Experience in our area is more important than breed descriptions.

We have fruit trees. We already have to fight the deer- turkeys too? ahhh! LOL I have Brown African. One arrived ill- wasn't sure to what extent when I got them and now both have respiratory infections. Metzers claimed it was my doing...yes I got my ducks at 3pm and by 6pm I gave them resp infections? Yes my doing. I am not happy right now. Now both geese are wheezing. ahhhh

Chicken bedding. Shavings are driving me bananas. I am using a dog kennel thing and they are flinging massive amounts of poopy shavings out. Anyone ever use hay as bedding? These almost 3 weekers are very vigorous! LOL And I am so glad you all told me NOT to mix the 2 weekers with the 4 day olds- gigantic difference in size. I did not realize how much my chicks had grown honestly!

 

How is everyone? Chickens and animals surviving the heat? Nice breeze past couple of days with 90 temps....that's pretty peachy for Redding! LOL

Straw can cause problems.

 

Put one of those absorbent pads down first, then the pine shavings. When it is time to clean, roll it all up and throw it away.
