I am so sorry!

The heat probably shut down the kidneys. They really have very sensitive organs.

Ron

yep, supposed to be hotter tomorrow.  not much more I can do besides the things i'm doing. no real signs of stress in anyone else today so that is good

Well shoot...you did your best. Hopefully it cools off before any more chickens are lost.

Thanks, for a few minutes I was kicking myself for going to the lake with the kids but then I remembered their faces and how much fun they had and then i remembered...family first.  it was the right thing to do. it was just her time and probably would have died if we were here which would have been even worse.

I will admit, Susie, soaking wet from her dip in the bucket, lying on the sheet in the bathtub, I'm pushing the back of her head to dip her beak in the water...............out slides an egg.  I know it was just "there" and needed to be expelled, but I told her she was a good girl.

The difference between breakfast and chicks, is the temperature you use to "cook" the eggs!

What breeds do I have?  More than any sane person would own.

Did you put the egg in an incubator?

I am waiting for the report from the lab, but probably heat related.

Naw, Susie is a feedstore Sussex, living in my egg flock.  The only boys in there are a couple of young Isbar cockerels that needed a place to stay.  I don't believe they are even breeding yet and I'm not much for producing crosses anyway.  The egg went into the fridge.

My incubators are so continuely full...............yikes it's frightening!

so sorry to read about the heat troubles -- one of my girls seems slightly less active than usual, but still alert and eating/drinking, so i'm just keeping an eye on her.

and i should be getting my first baby chicks in the mail either today or tomorrow -- may not even need a heat lamp for them, with these temps!  very very excited.

-- laura, plus frances & bella (silver penciled rocks), dixie & ethel (cuckoo marans), daisy (australorp), jane (light sussex), eleanor & maggie (EO basque), lucy two & speedy (cream legbars), amelia one and two (CL x pene crosses), AND max the swedish flower hen rooster! plus a bunch of newly-hatched babies...

and cats sophie, henry, and pearl, of course!

Spending time with your family is never the wrong choice. You did what you could for her and watching her die wouldn't have changed the outcome. However, taking the kids to lake is memories they'll keep forever.

So sorry for everyone suffering in the heat. Poor chickens. sad.png  I'm unhappy with mid-nineties, and can imagine how hard it must be 10-15 degrees hotter.th.gif

Hope it cools off soon.
