California - Northern

Congrats on a new coop and new chickens! Those are all great breeds. Make sure you get pictures!
I don't have any recent images of the coop, but here it is when it was almost done being built. There is now a run attached off the front, that will get a roof this spring/summer that is currently tarped.

@casportpony --
I call my peafowl peachicks until they are a year old. Once they are a year, I call them yearlings. Ducklings are ducklings until they feather out. Once feathered out, I call them juveniles. :D

Teehee -- takes too long to say yearlings or juveniles so we just say "chicks
:love

I do need to get some pictures! Lol, I call them chicks for many weeks!

They are fun and I did okay. Set 40 eggs and 34 hatched. I've had poults before, so I knew about putting a chick in with them, but thanks for mentioning it.

DO get some pictures and if they not over a month old, enter the Cutest Baby Fowl Photo Contest—Win a Brinsea Incubator!

I used to take my peachick to Tractor Supply with me. I did this until he was six months old. :lau

I have a bunch too. What breeds do you have?

Wow, 10 is old. Glad to hear the one I helped you with is still alive and doing well. What sort of coop upgrades are you making?

What types of chicks are you doing? 4-H is a wonderful program, I wish I had had the opportunity.

Long time! A couple of mine have scabs like that from their perch. What does she perch on?

Glad you're getting lots of eggs and a little money to help offset the cost of feed.

Dang, sorry about your losses. :hugs

Congrats on the ducklings and goslings! Get lots of pictures!

If you're ever in the Gilroy area, I could take your rooster.

Wow! Sriously long time! How are you?

Time flys! I can't believe your oldest is eight.

That's nice mix of breeds! Good point on the egg color making it easier to spot problems. Brooding indoors does get pretty smelly.

So sorry to hear that you had to have surgery. I hope you feel better soon and that your family can learn how to do your animal chores. Like you, I'd rather be out doing stuff than sick in bed. :th
Get well soon!

I have some fully feathered mixed-breed chicks that I'll sell cheaply.

Sounds like you got your hands full!

The weather has been so nice!

Have you though about what you might get?
4-H is a wonderful program! I wanted to do it as a kid and never got the chance either, so now that I have kids, I get to be involved! :) Kids are good for all sorts of things haha. The Club closest to us didn't even have a poultry project and yet they are in Fair Oaks, which is known for its chickens that roam the park and downtown! They even have a Chicken Run! So, I volunteered to lead the poultry project and have been co-leading/leading for three years now. Finally getting the hang of it! :D

My breeds of choice are bantams, since I live in suburbia. I have bantam Ameraucanas, d'Anvers, Watermaals, modern game bantams, Satins, and bobtail cochins. I love these breeds and couldn't believe how hard it's been to find them in California! I decided that I wanted to be a source for others in the state, although d'Anvers and Watermaals are not well known in general so I have been using them for showmanship to get them more attention. I have black, mottled, white, and self-blue d'Anvers and this year my blacks beat out 30 quail d'Anvers for Best and Reserve of Breed at the shows. I was so excited! I have only competed against myself in the shows with my Ameraucanas though--except for the Pacific Breeders show that included people from out of state. I have BBS and trying to grow my self-blues into a line and have project cuckoo and lavender cuckoos I'm working on as well. This hatch I got three with pea combs, so I'm making progress! :) I also sell bantam Easter Eggers to people that just need to have the tiny blue eggs.

Do you ever make it to any of the shows in CA? The Paso Robles show is always one of my favorites, but Lodi is huge and the sales barn always has great options!

Still here, and my 8 pullets from last spring have now all "graduated" to full hen-dom! I've had no time lately to hang out on BYC since our daughter and 2 very small kids moved in with us in March... The 3 year old loves the chickens and is learning how to gently pet them and give treats.

So, hi, everyone, from far northern Cal's redwood coast where spring has definitely sprung now. Love reading your chicken news!
Have they survived the mud apocalypse? I'm so glad that spring has arrived for you up there! You guys got it so much worse than we did down here. While the mud will be my forever nemesis, I still HATE the Valley heat the most! I wish I lived up by you in the cool, foggy redwoods! I try to get up that way at least once every couple of years for work or vacation--the Northern Coast is the BEST. Sounds like you got really busy really fast! Enjoy the littles and their love of chickens, it's the best! :love

@kurby22 -- 4H Yeah! Good for you! And you say bantams are hard to find in Calif? I found NPIP/AI Clean Buckaboo Farm in Orange County area here in So Calif. They have Frizzles, Satins, Laced Satins, D'Uccles, plus other breeds. They're a small operation but have a good enough reputation to be on the local news. I waited 9 months to get the color of DNA-sexed Silkie I wanted (Blue) plus I got a couple more that they had when I picked up my order January of this year.
