I have a GMC Envoy and I bought an extended warranty. Well, the heater does not work like it’s supposed to and my rear defrosters are not working properly either – Just the top three grids. So I take it to the dealership and guess what? The extended warranty doesn’t cover the repairs! The heater needs an actuator that costs $70 which is no problem, but the labor is $600!!! The service manager buys a “kit” to fix the rear defrosters, but he calls me and says it won’t work because there is a bad connection somewhere and the whole back glass would have to be replaced – I didn’t even ask him how much that would cost!!! Winter is coming (not that we really have much of one, but I do get cold!) so I have a heater that doesn’t work that great and no rear defrosters!!! UGH!

I can imagine that... A timing belt costs 30 bucks... timing belt change = $2200 at dealer. Still like my car :p

Go to a private shop, and forget extended warranties, they cover big things that won't fail anyways... usually.

Talk to the people you know and ask them what car repair shops they recommend and take your vehicle to them for more opinions. I won't bore you with the details, but last year I had an experience with my car that showed me that dealers aren't smarter than non-dealers and ordinary people who can work on cars.

<-- That one

It's a lexus, go figure. It's really just a toyota, but one lot down the same labor is 160 an hr vs 70. I got the local shop to do it for about 1k less. Labor is intense on it and had the water pump changed at the same time... and some nice new iridium spark plugs since those had to come out to get to the timing belt. I didn't have the tools for it, but if I did, I'd try myself! Doing oil, alternator fixes, and breaks saves a lot in the end.

Find someone who works on cars. That's what I do. Buy the parts yourself and get someone to to do the labor and them pay them. Anything is better than $600 in labor...which is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of by the way.

We need ours, that's the only reason auto repair shops get away with charging so much. We pay or we can't drive.

Definately don't go to the dealership, they're the worst!

Auto extended warranties are El Toro do do! They are betting it wont break! You are betting it will, and guess what! What they dont cover will break! Save your money to fix what does! My humble opinion .
