Nevadans? - Page 1046

If you guys get really hungry Sunny you can always eat chicken feed! lau.gif

That Wix Farms looks really cool Missy! I wish they were closer to me. sad.png The UNR Meat Sciences Dept. used to have Wolf Pack lamb packaged for sale at the Scolari's in Carson City. But they stopped selling it even before Scolari's closed. Their lamb was awesome - much better than what else is available at local stores, which mostly comes from Austrailia or New Zealand! I called UNR and they told me they still sold it from their local store, but of course that is up in Reno/Sparks area somewhere and the hours are pretty much in conflict with my work schedule so I haven't eaten lamb in ages.

frow.gif StevieNay and welcome-byc.gif NV thread! As you can see from my previous post, UNR/Wolf Pack did have lamb, but my information is not current (maybe two years old). I think they sell beef and possibly pork, too. Also, there is Murray Ranch in Pleasant Valley (S of Reno heading toward Carson City) that sells grass fed beef. I usually get mine from Lahontan Valley Meats, which is on Hwy 50 between Silver Springs and Fallon. It would be a bit of a drive from Reno, but it is the tastiest beef I've ever had! They sell it in 50 and 100 lb. packs that contain a variety of cuts plus some ground beef.

Ooh, the Murray Ranch in Pleasant Valley wouldn't be too far, and I know I'd prefer grass fed! I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the info! I have never cooked lamb, so I'm not sure if I'd know what to do with it. I guess that's what Google is for smile.png

Side note, I just fed my ~4 week old chicks some small crickets... it made my day. Some of them didn't want to have anything to do with it, but the others were scrambling all over, it was adorable!

As for raw milk, I know some grad students who "own" a cow, so they are provided with fresh raw milk, but they don't keep it or care for it. Basically to get around legalities a small group pays for a cow's feed and keep and are given its fresh raw milk. I'm not sure how they got that set up, but I can definitely ask.

Has anyone bought beef from Wolf Pack meats or grass-fed beef from local ranchers? I just got a big chest freezer, so I'm considering making a meat investment, but I'm a little unsure where to start for that.

frow.gif welcome!  I have not bought grass-fed local beef yet but I do plan on it some time.

thanks for the info on the beef, Ron.  It might be worth a drive with that recommendation.

Welcome StevieNay to the Nevada thread!     frow.gif    Yea!!!  Another lizard lover!  I'll add you to the opening post now.  I haven't bought meat in large quantities before but living so far from town now we really should get a freezer and do that.

Haha Ron, we won't starve.  Have you seen how huge my marans roos are now?  There is one I call Tank (after a good friend of ours) cause he is so wide and sooo heavy!  I'm sure we can eat for a few days off of him alone!  I've got 4 exra roos here and I really need to get rid of them one way or the other.  I hear marans' meat is really tasty but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks Elizabeth!  I got 2 more hours of sleep this morning so I feel human again.     big_smile.png

StevieNay, it looks like you're going to fit in very well here.  I love lamb for mediterranean food.  It gives an authentic flavor you can't fake.  If you want, I can post a couple of recipes.

My husband told me that Wolf Pack Meats is shutting down.  I've never been there, but I'm sad anyway.  I always wanted to buy some of their meat.

Murray Ranch... I see the ads on Craigslist for local honey.  I'm really big on local honey, and use it homeopathically whenever anyone is coming down sick.  Haven't been out there yet, though, to buy some.

I looked at the lamb at Savemart.  It ranged from $6.99/lb for ground lamb to $11.99/lb for loin chops.  Pretty crazy.

The lamb sounds really good. I need to wait though and see what John's great uncle from Yerington has this fall. He was a butcher there at the ranch and he usually has a few lambs we buy off of him. It's about $120 for the whole lamb and he packages everything up for us. He just can't resale it to anyone otherwise I could offer it up on here.  Last year the lambs were way too small and he said it wasn't worth it so I'm really hoping this year they will be.

You cook lamb just like beef but make sure it's only rare to medium rare otherwise it will get pretty tough unless it's ground.

There's a ranch at the farmer's market who should be there to sell their beef and meats they raise themselves. I'm going to look into it this year.

As for owning part of a cow and stuff, here's the link and anyone can join in on it, I really want to. I don't believe it's illegal to bring milk back from another state though, it's done all of the time here. Sunny, I think they're some where near you?
