This is the porch and ramp I made for the coop.  They enjoy hanging out on the porch and underneath it. 

Here's the ramp up to the roosts. I've seen some use it and some just fly up.

This is the Welsummer, Woody Woodpecker.  Notice the feathers sticking up on top of her head, hence the name. She likes sitting in the nest box but apparently either is not laying yet or is not laying in the nest box.  we've only gotten a couple of welsummer eggs and we don't know which are laying. The welsummer eggs have been laid in the run or on the floor.

Hope the girls settle down soon, Missy!   It's business as usual over here, thankfully.  I think it was definitely smart for me to keep Gunda so pecking order would not need to be reestablished--at least not the top spot. The chickens did not venture out much today.  Just went out on their porch and then came back inside the coop.  I gave them a whole cabbage to entertain themselves with. 

 

I definitely think you need to grab that BO roo, Ron!  I'm trying my best to enable you. 

 

glad your chick made it through the night ok, horseshowmomnv. Hopefully they will all be fine.  27 is a lot. I had 25 and boy did they grow fast.  They were crammed in the brooder like sardines at the end.  I was building the coop as they were growing.  We got them out there at 6 weeks. What a relief! 

 

Hi sheryl, I hope you can figure out something for Patty.  I'm sure it's hard to see her sick and not know what to do for her. 

 

stevienay, glad your coop is holding up.   Ours is too.  although when it rained heavily, we had some water come in the window openings because we just have plastic stapled up over the hw cloth right now and some of the plastic came unfastened with the wind. Haven't made actual windows yet.  It's on the long to-do list, though.

 

 

I'll be back in a little while some photos of the porch and ramp I made for the coop. I'm also going to try to finish naming all my chickens. Missy puts me to shame. She had names for the ones she got from me weeks before she even got them.  

On the way back home yesterday, Sahara asked about Taco.  She wants the RIR chick from the Ideal order, and she's going to name her Taco.  I told her, "Taco might not even be layed yet!"  Even the virtual chickens have names.

If we took the welsummer that was laying, she's taking a break.  I found one egg that looked different... it was the size of the faverolles eggs but the color of Original's eggs.  So I don't know whose it was, but the faverolles all lay flesh-colored eggs so I think it's from one of the new girls.

So far the pecking order is: Queen Original, Princess Sour, Lady Tom Kha Gai... Shawarma apparently is Sour's whipping girl.  I tried to move her to the opposite perch, but she just went back for more abuse.  Cacciatore is a peasant but content to hang out by herself.  She'll get along well with the faverolles.  I'm not sure where Tikka stands, but she's not on the offense so I think she'll also be in the peasant population.  Sweet was just hanging out on the perch, not minding anyone else.
 

If yu think she has an egg there..take her in the house,,,,fix her up a luxurious bath in the sink....hold her in there till she relaxes and she should be good for 20-30 minutes...I think it feels so good to them that they start to relax..I have fed yogurt...anything they like...some people try to probe or oil the vent...I have not done that personally...if nothing else the bath feels really good to them, but I try to do that around noon on warmer days,...or blow drying..which can be a little stressful for a chicken! Or keep her in an area with a heated lamp and no drafts..

  It's worth a try and I always try to make myself feel better thinking that at least she knew I loved her enough to give her a spa treatment!

I can't keep  your names straight but I would put my money on the BR or the SLW for laying the egg.  They have been the most consistent at laying. I think some BOs have started but I don't know who. Same with the BA's. Hard to keep them all straight.   Most of our eggs are still small pullet sized eggs.  Which is Sour, the one with the yellow band or without?  

The welsummers often take longer to start laying, I've read.  I'm guessing at most 2 of the 5 have laid and that's only been about 4 eggs total in the past 2 weeks.  So it may take a bit longer.  Sounds like they are all getting adjusted over there.

Sour is the one without the yellow band.

When my faverolles started laying, it surprised me how sudden and consistent it was.  One girl started laying for a week, then I had two... two days later it was three, and then consistent after that.  We get about 4-5 a week from each of them, without fail.  The eggs are still pullet-sized though they're about 10 months old, but they're very dependable.

Our PCS to Germany is fast approaching. You'd be doing a great service to not only your beautiful BO's but also helping out a local military family by providing a loving home to their pet roo!

(How's that for enabling???)

Thank you Stacy, she doesn't have an egg stuck. She got the spa treatment and she also had some nice french bread soaked with olive oil and wine. Nothing has helped her. I can feel something hard in her stomach area only and I can't feel anything from the vent. She's able to poo so that means she's not egg bound.

I've found 2 tumor/cysts on her so perhaps this is a tumor in her stomach area. I'm going to start anti-biotics tonight on her to see if that will help. She does not have ascites for sure since she isn't swelling up if she did. She slightly bloated as if she had an egg but that's it. She pushes like she trying to lay an egg but nothing.

I went into the coop to find blood on Barbeque's comb, and a little smeared on Original's side.  She came in for a minute while I washed some of the blood off... hopefully to make that comb less of a target.  I knew the faverolles would move to the bottom as soon as we got some bossies in there.  In a few days I'll let them run around the yard... I just want to keep them in the new coop a little longer so they recognize it as their new home and laying area.

It's pretty good!  The only thing that is stopping me is I worry about my other rooster beating him up (or vice-versa). What do you all think? Is there any way grown roosters can learn to love one another?

Missy - I hope the fighting stops soon. None of my chickens got bloody combs when we introduced the new ones, let's hope this is only a short faze.

Ron - Can you separate them? Make your flock into 2 instead where the BO's can all be together would be nice.
