Why can't chicks be cute and fluffy forever but lay full sized eggs

Seth, they'd get eggbound wayy to easy, hahaha, but a chick that stays a chick forever would be so freakin adorable.

They're all frost intolerant, and will die if it gets below 32 degrees.  I'd wait until May 15th at the very earliest... a bit later if you live in the North Valleys.  If mid-May comes along and we've been frost free for over a week, go ahead and plant,  then watch the weather.  If it looks like it's going to get below 38 degrees where you live, go out and cover them.

Right now, about the only things to go outside permanently are leafy greens, peas, and onions.  Some people plant potatoes this early, but they're also frost intolerant and the leaves will die back to ground level.
 

Local "folklore" around here has it that you never sow frost intolerant plants while there is still snow on a certain peak - I forget the name but I know which one it is. That usually doesn't happen until late May.

In the Reno area, it's Peavine mountain and last year the snow stayed on there until September!  So it's not always a good rule of thumb!  Average last frost date here in Stead is about Memorial Day but it really depends on the weather, as Missy says and you can always cover tender plants if needed. But I do wait until about mid-May to plant the beans, etc. I use wall o waters for my tomatoes and peppers when i first put them out.

Just wanted to throw some things out there since its spring! Yea!

-Looking for a new buff orp rooster, grown or I'll take a chick with a suspiciously large comb :)

(my old boy didn't make it through the winter, RIP Hank)

-Have a friend looking for white banty cochins/hatching eggs

-Looking for retirement homes for older hens, might still lay a little, but just need a sunny spot to dust bathe :)

About the planting...we are in WV and I waited until mid june last year to plant tomatoes, squash, peppers...even covered the snow killed 80% of my first attempt. Had to replant and shell out more $ for larger plants...discouraging, makes me really want a greenhouse!

Does anyone know when S&W (in carson) chick days is happening?

ETA: (Since Sunny jumped in ahead of me ) S&W already had it a couple of weeks ago. But they still have chicks left, and are getting more.

Thanks Elizabeth that wall o water looks cool! I'm going to have to give it a try.  It reminds me of what I've read about the Indians of the Altiplano in Bolivia. They dig canals around their plants and fill them with water.
