My husband is even interested in going, though he doesn't want to buy.  I think we're up to our ears in poultry this year, but I can always make a list for next year and get names of who offers them.

UNLESS something happens to one of Sahara's ducks as they travel in the mail.  In that case, I'll be in the market for a cayuga cross or two.  What are they crossed with?

No worries Missy. We'll still be there. We like to hang out and take our time with stuff. Plus my kids love feed stores LOL

Well HOPEFULLY all is well with your ducklings in the mail!  The mother is a crested mallard and daddy has to be a cayuga because they are black with white on their chest.  and Momma duck is very quiet and small, the Cayugas i have are huge and SQ and they are big like the daddy.  IMG_0004.JPG

We have one we are keeping that is feathered out and she is solid black with a very small white spot on her chest.

So for those of us that can make it 10 a.m. at the swap on Saturday? That's what I read right?

Sorry I've kind of been off and on today. I loaded and unloaded 300 semi truck tires so I can use them to build a much needed retaining wall here. I'm a bit tired and sore.

Ron I love your run! it's great, and your coop looks about the same size as mine. I'll have to borrow your ideas for the run. My honey thinks its overkill, but we have one of the few natural springs around and have already seen on our property mustangs, deer, rabbit, quail, martins, pack rats, mice, hawks, vultures, coons, bobcat, coyotes, and cougar tracks and heard them. I'd rather know my birds are safe and pampered then dinner for the wildlife. besides they'll probably need to stay locked up on market days. My honey also thinks we don't need to share an order of chicks and should keep all 25 ourselves. roll.png So a bigger more secure run will definitely be required.

If I missed anyone ladies then I'm sorry, but I am dead on my feet. I'll try to be more thorough tomorrow.

Except for my three EEs, yes?

Hope to see you at the swap! :)

I'll have to get a few more opinions before I commit to one.  We live in the old Southwest, where I have a big yard but very close neighbors.  This is our first experience with ducks ever, though, so we're still going to see how it goes.  Both cayugas and harlequins are supposed to be fairly calm and quiet.

Well, I had a huge talk with the kiddos today.  Getting them to help out has been like pulling teeth lately.  I told them, I realize I've taken on a lot of extra projects that take a lot of extra work.  I know they would rather play.  Paid employment and schoolwork are mandatory, but gardens and chickens are optional things that we do to make life better.  And I asked them if they felt it was too much work, if I needed to drop some of my endeavors to produce things ourselves.  It would mean spending more money on food, and less on fun.  The chickens are my babies, and I'll do the work myself if I need to, but that means they can't eat or sell the eggs.  They said they'd try harder to pitch in, because they enjoyed the benefits and realized the importance.

Last year, we had a problem with Sahara's refusal to work in the garden when asked.  So we told her that she couldn't eat out of the garden until she helped with it.  And since I cooked with garden produce every day, that meant she had to cook her own food.  Luckily, I taught her how to cook a few years ago.  She held strong for two weeks, complaining about it, until she finally gave in and started helping again.  She admitted that the benefits were worth the work, and she wasn't going to coast on the benefits without offering help.

Sooner then you think! My daughter and I are best friends but when she was a teenager, dang if she didn't make me wonder why humans don't eat their young!

Her daughter is 4 and giving her a run for her money, so pay back is in play! Of course they say my granddaughter is just like me (which is true hmm.png ), so I get blamed for everything!

Mine was still in her mid twenties when she told me how much she appreciated me.  She said she liked that her DF let her do whatever she wanted but she didn't have any respect for him because of it.  She said I was always her rock!  She also has a 4 year old DD now (she's 32) who is just as stubborn as she is so she has a lot of challenges with her.  Ahhh sometimes Karma is such a wonderful thing!        lol.png

Being a parent is a tough job.  You don't get to be their best friend.  You have to be the person that teaches them to be the best adult they can be.  Especially challenging as they head into their teenage years when they start feeling like they don't need your guidance anymore and you know they need it more than ever!  Being a grandparent on the other hand is much nicer!!!  Sorry.  That probably doesn't help a lot right now.  You are teaching your kids to be responsible, hardworking people in a generation that seems to feel entiltled to everything whether they have worked for it or not.  You won't always handle things perfectly, no one can, but your kids will love you for having put so much effort into parenting.  You're doing great!!!   hugs.gif
