Never been in a tornado. I watched a super cell forming over my head once and a huge bolt of lightening came down out of that cloud, not 30 feet from where I was, and hit a transformer. The explosion was deafening! I was at a light waiting for it to turn green and I noticed the folks in the car next to me were staring, wide eyed, straight up at the sky. I looked up and wasn't even sure what the heck I was seeing! We don't get many tornados in the Bay Area and I'd never seen a cloud turning like that.
Funny thing was we were all still sitting there waiting for the light to turn green. It took a few minutes (might have been seconds but it seemed like a long time) for us to realize the power was out. We were in shock I guess and it didn't even dawn on us that the light was out. I knew the storm was bad cause I had passed several fallen trees and the wind was terrible. This was when Nate was young and I was trying to get to him at his Day Care. My boss wasn't going to let us go till the phones went out and then I couldn't call to make sure they were OK.
Once I realized the power was out I took off, went and picked up Nate and tried to get home as fast as possible. We were stuck at another dead traffic light, trying to turn right, when several cars got backed up cause one car wouldn't just go! We were all honking at her since there was nothing in her way and I looked to see what she was waiting for. Her head was turned to the right and she looked terrified! I looked over and there were waves of water pouring out of the car lot we were next to! We were facing a flash flood and I couldn't move cause there were cars jamming me in both front and back!
I leaned out the window of my car, screaming, honking and pointing to the car in front of me to draw their attention to the water pouring down at us. As soon as the guy saw the water he slammed his car into gear and peeled rubber getting around the lady that had stopped in front of us. I didn't even notice if he cleared her car or clipped it and I didn't care! I just wanted to get the heck out of there. Shortly after, it started hailing so hard that there were huge "drifts" of hail everywhere! It looked like it had been snowing for hours.
Not the most dramatic of storm stories but considering this happened in Palo Alto and Mountain View (in the Bay Area) it was a pretty big deal. There were two tornados that day that touched down in Sunnyvale but they only damaged a couple of roofs. Earthquakes we are used to there and flash floods are not unheard of but Tornados? Not so much.

Yikes, the news warned that we could have tornado again and after the one that went right by us last year, I know I don't want to go through that again! I had just bought baby chicks at the feed store and ran out to the barn to put them in the brooder that my husband had set up for me and got stuck in there. The wind, thunder, lightening, rail and hail were so strong I couldn't leave the barn to get back to the house for about 45 minutes! When I came back in the house I asked my husband if he had thought to come help me! He was too busy videoing the tornado and the phone was ringing like crazy with people calling to see if we were OK....I asked him if he bothered to tell them his wife was missing!!!! The video did make the bay area news (Channel 2's weatherman is our friend).
Hoo Boy! I would have been fuming!!! How scary!
When I am scared I react by getting mad instead. It seems to be an easier emotion for me to express than fear.
Kim and Pam stay safe! Jeez I'm glad I'm on the dry side of the mountains right now (don't get to say that very often).
