Hi Aubrey! We missed you!
Seth, my favorite color is the fawn, but he's not going to be a stud. I guess my second favorite would be the white with brown spots. The third one is solid black, which is pretty, but I like unusual markings. Which is why I'm trying to limit the number of black chickens I have.
Well, the ameraucanas got their shots today. They weren't happy with it. My husband has given more shots than I have, so I held them while he did it.
The good news: Other than the silkie that had the accident, the other 10 babies are doing much better. They just have a bit of wheezing. This morning, they dove right in and devoured their yogurt mash.
The incidental news: Gourmet is broody. She's my first. I'm not going to try to do anything to break the broodiness, because...
The bad news: the sickness spread to the laying hens. Right now, Barbeque's having such a hard time breathing that I can hear her from the back door of the house. It came on so fast, too! At 5pm, she was walking around the yard. At 7pm, she was gasping for breath, with snot dripping from her beak. It sounds like a baby crying. We dumped antibiotics down her throat, and put them in the water. The hens are on lockdown in the coop until a full 48 hours of antibiotics. If Barbeque doesn't look better in the morning, we're going to put her out of her misery. She just turned 1 year old, about 11 days ago. All of our egg customers have been informed that we're not selling again for at least two weeks.
