In the past my girls hid a nest of their own and hatched them but these two just took over the laying box! There are 4 other boxes and after two days of some noisy clucking when the others have come in to lay, the other chickens have started laying in the box furthest from the two broodies. OK, so that solved and I'll be able to still have eggs to sell but the other issue is the laying boxes are about 2 feet off the floor and in with all the rest of the flock! So I'm wondering what to do. 20 years ago I had a girl hatch in the hen house and the chicks were hatched dry but dead so I think the other chickens killed them.

I'm afraid if I move the nests they'll abandon them. Any ideas or anyone have some experience with this?

I did have broodies that abandoned their eggs when I moved them but when I left them be that was a disaster too!  I think you have to try no matter what.  It doesn't work to leave them in with the whole flock.

I can't believe I finally have not one but two broodie's! wee.gif

Another question I have for those who have hatched from broodies, since I have two do I need to separate them too or can they be next to each other. They're buddies and are always together, do you think they'll comingle their chicks?

Some broodies will share mothering duties but I have no idea how to tell which will and which won't.  I will try to get updated pics of the kids that came from your eggs and I will take notes on how many polish and how many of the others there are.  There are some real beauties from that hatch!  This weekend is super packed so remind me if I forget.

Great pics everyone!!!

5 of the polish are black and one of those has a spot of white feathers on his head. Most of the polish are roos. 3 of them are white/splash. Well I should say 2 are splash but they don't have a lot of color, mostly white and one girl is white (hope it's a girl anyway, looks more rooish these days).  One of the splash is definitely a girls so I am very happy about that!  On the mixed birds/EEs one is a splash, 2 are very pretty light with brown and other darker feathering.  One more is light with a lot of color in the neck feathers and the others are dark.

Hi Aubrey!  We missed you!

Seth, my favorite color is the fawn, but he's not going to be a stud.  I guess my second favorite would be the white with brown spots.  The third one is solid black, which is pretty, but I like unusual markings.  Which is why I'm trying to limit the number of black chickens I have.

Well, the ameraucanas got their shots today.  They weren't happy with it.  My husband has given more shots than I have, so I held them while he did it.

The good news: Other than the silkie that had the accident, the other 10 babies are doing much better.  They just have a bit of wheezing.  This morning, they dove right in and devoured their yogurt mash.

The incidental news: Gourmet is broody.  She's my first.  I'm not going to try to do anything to break the broodiness, because...

The bad news: the sickness spread to the laying hens.  Right now, Barbeque's having such a hard time breathing that I can hear her from the back door of the house.  It came on so fast, too!  At 5pm, she was walking around the yard.  At 7pm, she was gasping for breath, with snot dripping from her beak.  It sounds like a baby crying.  We dumped antibiotics down her throat, and put them in the water.  The hens are on lockdown in the coop until a full 48 hours of antibiotics.  If Barbeque doesn't look better in the morning, we're going to put her out of her misery.  She just turned 1 year old, about 11 days ago.  All of our egg customers have been informed that we're not selling again for at least two weeks.

Chickens: faverolles, australorps, Delaware, barred rock, welsummer, silver laced wyandotte, lavender and buff x wheaten ameraucanas, BLRW, blue and splash andalusian, cochin, exchequer leghorn, silkie, brabanter, minorca, turken, RIR, brahma, speckled sussex...Ducks: two welsh harlequins, two blue swedish...  Two dogs, a snake, two parents and two kids... and food gardens everywhere else.

hit.gifOh no, Missy I'm so very sorry. I'm still praying several times a day for them.

Aubrey, love seeing you on here again. Yes, I know you can tell, you are missed so much it's not even funny.

Pam, what did you do with your broddies?

Candy, the son of your splash roo is so pretty. Leroy is going to be great here.

Duckling update: Wynnie said it was time to go outside with her ducklings so we let her go with them. I took the brooder with her so the ducklings were not exposed to predators since I didn't have any netting ready for this yet. Wynnie went crazy, so to speak, scratching through the straw in the brooder with the ducklings. All the ducks are fine and nothing happened to them but as she was scratching through the straw the ducklings was being tossed a bit. I didn't like that one bit. I know if they were baby chicks then all would have been fine but these are not chicks. Wynnie is now back with the other layers and the ducklings are back in the house with the heat lamp. Wynnie was upset about it so I brought her out again to see what would happen and she went straight to the crate and started scratching away like there was not tomorrow. I did not have the ducklings in there but I know she would have done it anyways even if they were in there.

Also, I will never help a duckling having issues hatching as long as everything is good in the incubator again. A duckling pipped yesterday afternoon. We left it alone until it started zipping vertically instead of around the radius. I decided I better help it hatch because there was not way it could get out of there like that. So I helped it along and got it out of the shell and lo and behold the yoke wasn't absorbed yet. He's back in the incubator now and is doing great so far.

Thanks Sunny! Aubrey, please don't stay away so long! Sheryl, I'm preparing the stall we keep hay in for the two broodies. We bought less bales of hay for the horses to make room. We'll move them tonight. My husband wants to move them to the grow out pen he built me last summer for the Polish but it's only 4ft tall and I can't bend over to get to them. He wanted to know why I needed to get to them.....ummmm, cause I wanna hold the babies! Who doesn't know that? Anyway, the stall is where I've moved all the other broodies and their babies.

Now that these broodies have run most of the layers off, I've found one laying in the horse trailer and another in the retail displays that I have on Craigslist, covered with a tarp. I heard a little purr when I walked by and there she was. I need to see how many eggs she has in there!
