I've never heard of folks eating the eggs!  If they are that delicious maybe I should check into getting some too!

Mine are just like that - they come running if I wet any ground in their run but they aren't real enthusiastic about the hose spraying on them.

My mom's uncle had a large farm in West Texas and they had guineas, which is where I got to try the eggs. They are smaller than a typical chicken egg but the yolks are incredibly rich - more of a dark orange color than yellow. BTW Mandy there is an active Guinea Fowl forum here on BYC. I'm sure you can find all the info you need there!

There is a person near Penn Valley, CA that raises Guinea fowl. They advertise on Gold Country Craig's list.

I have a line with misters that hang across the chicken yard. The older chickens have learned to stand under them when they get hot, but the young birds keep back from them. When it gets really hot I wet down the whole yard, birds and all. They hate it but sometimes they really need it! 

Hi everyone! It's been a bit of a busy day for me today getting everything done on my list while I have the next 2 days off. Sunny, your pasta turned out beautiful. I wished I made enough for us this time. I shall next time. I made my 3rd batch of Sugo (sauce) from my tomatoes I grew last year and canned. I'm out of canned tomatoes now so this Sugo better last for the next 3 or 4 months. I really need to get a commercial canner and can this stuff, you can't buy it in the stores. The only place that's even close to this sugo is the Gold N' Silver restaurant. We know the owner and he's Northern Italian so his sauce is pretty close to ours.

Now I must get the rest of my spring bulbs planted around my fountain but the wind is blowing so hard I'm afraid to venture outside because I don't want to get sick again like I was 2 weeks ago.

Funny thing happened to me today...

friend of mine came into the shop with a bunch of real professional-types in tow. They have just gotten some land in the north virginia area and are meeting with lawers, land owners, and city councelmen and women to work to get the laws changed regarding growing and selling produce locally! If they are successful, they plan on making it legal to begin urban farming for the intention of selling ON SITE and even at PRODUCE STANDS in town! They are planning on putting STRICT rules in place so that they will be taken seriously and so that if the operation does come to fruition people will be forced to farm and sell safely and responsibly. pretty cool eh?

Wow, that's awesome!  I don't think I'd be one to try to sell my produce, mostly because I don't want to deal with the strict rules.  That's the same reason I don't sell my bread to more than a few people... to do it on a larger scale would mean having the Health Dept. in my house.  And brooding chicks wouldn't go over well.

But there are so many HUGE yards here!  Can you imagine if a lot of that wasted space was used for providing local food?  The cost would probably go down as well, with little fuel cost to get it to us.  (Just a lot of water cost.)

Aubrey - that is way cool. I must get me a ranch going so I can have tons of produce and eggs and not to mention PASTA to sell. We had a chance when we were looking for a place to buy but we wanted a small yard after having a huge yard in California. It wore us out but now we wished we would have bought a bigger place after all. It was so funny, as soon as we saw the yard we would turn away and say nope not gonna buy it because the yard is too big.

A big "yard" is only a hassle if it is "landscaped" with useless things like grass and other high maintenance plants/features. Not that a big garden isn't a lot of work but it's got rewards well beyond just the aesthetic. I can only see one other house from 90% of my "yard" (defined as the area immediately around the house). I almost never hear any sounds that aren't produced from my own property. And I LOVE it!

Oh Ron, I envy you so much having your land like you do and having less laws as well there. Someday we shall have the same.
