Last year Bella wouldn't let any chicken roost until they were laying eggs but not this time. It's like they are one big happy family. I'm so surprised by this. Nonni said put them all together now. There won't be any issues with any of them. Boy was she right.

I'm not quite there yet.  The older ducks are with the chickens, but they still haven't quite figured out that coop = food.  In the morning before I let them out, I refill their water bowl just to encourage them to eat before they leave the coop, and I try to let the chickens out for their morning treat before that, so the ducks aren't intimidated away from eating.  But when they notice the run door is open, they're sprinting out to jump in the water.  And 2 hours later, they're crying for food.  I place a bowl of Flock Raiser at the end of the pond so they can mostly eat in peace, but unless I sit there and hold it the whole time, the chickens or dogs try to get it.  And there's probably a cereal bowl at the bottom of the pond, because I can't find it anywere.  It'll be a lot easier when they finally figure out the purpose of that coop.

The babies go out with me for exercise when I'm feeding the big ones.  I won't let them on the pond because I don't want to go swimming after them!  They get to go in Oh'no's pool, and Oh'no crawls in with them.  But Century (the month-old cayuga) will chase the babies if they come near her.  That should stop when they're older, but there's no allowing those babies outside fulltime.

Ok I've planted over 100 ground feet of potatoes and 23 feed/shopping bags of them.  I also gave at least 30 pieces away to friends and family members, trying to spread the madness.  Mandy gave me 6 feed bags, just the kind I've been looking for, and I even tried out a Flock Raiser bag with holes punched in it, to see how they do.  I have 3 seed potatoes left, and don't want to go searching for another bag just for those 3.  So I posted on Facebook that they go to the first person who can come get them from me.  And that order from Idaho hasn't even arrived yet.

Next year, I think I'll order 6lbs of seed potatoes, instead of 14.

That is strange those ducks don't know where the food is. I haven't put the newest ducks outside yet, that's still several weeks away still until they can go into the grow out area.

Aubrey was going to close the coop when a burgalar jumped in her yard aubrey handed him a bowl of chile and the bugalar looked at her funny. The cops arrived 5 minutes later and all they found was a brused body in a pile of feathers next to an empty bowl. lol.png

Happy Mother's Day!!  Hope it was a good day for all.  I bought some feed at 1 Stop Ranch & Feed yesterday and got a carnation for mother's day.  That was so unexpected and nice.

Glad all your chicks and chickens and ducks are getting along for the most part, sheryl.  My 12 week olds and big girls are getting along well.  Just a few pecks here and there but nothing serious.  My BLRW blue girl even roosted up on the big roost next to a BO and an EE the other night.  The other 12 week olds are still a little confused at night and really want to get back into their favorite corner in the divided section.

Missy, you will have potatoes coming out of your ears! I made a raised bed out front of concrete blocks yesterday and planted squash and zucchini. i still have some more beds to make but need to make several trips to the store. the potting soil and blocks are heavy.

can't wait to see photos of your new chicks, Sunny

I love how exuberance leads to abundance.... i.e., the potatoes.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing "Next year I think I'll order 6 lbs instead of 14."  OMG!   Kinda reminds me of the time at the ranch I planted 32 tomato plants....for two people.  Luckily I had a juicer, a freezer (LOTS of sauce that year) and a garden-deprived office staff to take them off my hands....oh, yeah.  And the chickens.  Most days I had one or two feed buckets worth and absolutely NO kitchen counter space.   If I never see another little yellow lightbulb tomato again I'd be happy.

But, what's worse, is that a friend of ours in town did his back deck and thought he'd plant some seeds to landscape the slope in the back of his house.....It turned out to be 92 zucchini plants!

th.gif

I told him he was crazy...that he'd never be able to give away that many zukes.  Even his dog hated him by the end of the summer.

This year -- no fertile ranch terrace -- I'm limited to container planting.  Last year we had a bumper crop of jalepeno chiles (which husband pickled a couple quarts worth) and I just harvested up some "Oops!  Look behind this weed...I forgot I planted them" garlic.  Got over a dozen nice heads.  Got a few bean plants in, one tomatillo, two volunteer tomatoes (no idea what they are) and assorted peppers.  We'll see.....

If you may have to eat it, don't name it!
