*sigh* well geeze, the good news in the chicken front was short lived.
Turns out Nanners is broody and has made a nest of rotton eggs under the deck far beyond our reach. If I could grab her then I would put her away in a special spot and let her set some eggs but she will not come out at all. Not even budge FOR WORMS. And Mark, jesus he is the sweetest man alive. He said that if we arent able to get her by sundown He will sleep on the deck with the dog to keep coons away from her, and will continue to do so until we can catch her and put her in the kennel. Geeze, Mark.
On top of that I was sitting out there trying to think of clever schemes and my darling Lil' Frizz, the red frizzled cochin who is also one of my sweetest birds, was sitting alone on the deck napping. She woke up and started gasping for air. I went to go see what was going on and her nostrils were clogged up with liquid and she was gasping. I got a q-tip and cleaned her up and thats when I noticed the yucky smell. Crimany.....
I picked her up and brought her out front. We sat here for about ten minutes and she just made repeated motions like she was yawning. I set up a seperate pen for her in the front yard just in case. She has since stopped gasping and her nostrils have dried up but I just dont know what to do. It could be a little thing or it could be a big thing. I mean, Ive seen a couple of my girls get runny noses before....like, a LONG time ago. Back at the old house one of em had a runny nose once and a sniffle and that was that and it got better in a matter of days and no one else ever got sick. Im hoping thats what this is.
I dont know though, I am going to go inside and shower and change my clothes then inspect everyone one else. I guess if Frizz seems fine in the morning and no one else seems sick within the next couple of days then we will know it isnt anything major. The hard thing though is that If she is sick with something major, and ive cought it in time...how will i know? I mean, If she is the only one....I can cull her just in case but what if she ISNT really ill. These things are so scary. Fortunately if its the big bad one we will know for certain within two days. I am even considering putting another bird in her pen with her and seeing if it gets sick. If it doesnt then Ill know that shes just sneezing, ya know? Its hard to say how to deal with these things but I do feel good that I caught this almost immediately and was able to separate her.
Poor Lil Frizz, i just love her so much. Maybe Im just beeing too worried about these darn birds.
