Oh they're LOUD alright! Unbelievably so! They say that if you can stand them for the first year of their lives, after that they calm/quiet down. They're dumb as rocks too... one guinea will be standing in a field with the flock behind it and the one facing away will call and call for the rest of them but do you think it would just turn around and look for them? That would be too simple, or too smart, however you want to look at it! I got rid of mine!

Stitch seems to be eating on his own now... thank the Lord! I guess overnight he got hungry enough. I guess he just had a hump day and was having a hard time. Good thing he's over it. He's such a cute little guy/girl, whatever. Don't know yet.

re: Pressure cookers
I had a deposition recently where the 3-gal pressure cooker in a soul food restaurant (used to cook greens) did explode. I looked at the pictures....WOW! It was kitchen carnage. It blew the salamander (unit used for heating food/keeping it warm on a shelf above the stove) to bits. The lid became like a missile and took out the back wall creating a hole into the next establishment you could crawl through, a TV fell off the wall, and the iron grill grates of the stove were turned into confetti. The pot itself was fine, but the lid was in 10+ pieces (mind you, it was probably 1" thick or so). The lawsuit was about one of the restaurant patrons (closest to the kitchen pass-through window) claiming loss of hearing. Considering the deep fryer was next to the stove, they're very lucky there wasn't a huge kitchen fire.
Anyway, it got me to thinking that maybe I don't want to inherit my mom's pressure cooker....especially since it's probably about as old as I am and -- like me -- possibly structurally unsound (it sounds to be about as in the same condition as the one in the restaurant: The polish off the chrome and really old). I may grumble when bumped, but at least I don't explode. ![]()
The pressure cooker exploded most likely NOT because someone bumped it, but because it was perhaps overstuffed and some bit o' green got stuck in the pressure outlet...the investigators are still trying to figure that one out.
I keep seeing the new electric pressure cookers being touted by celebrity chefs on Home Shopping, but at present I'm not feeling safe about 'em. Pity, because nothing makes an artichoke quicker than a go-round in a pressure cooker.
that's a scary story. I have a pressure cooker but I've only used it a few times. I am kind of scared of it. My mom uses hers all the time and has for years. it's one with the little metal thing on top that shakes.
no guinea fowl for me but good luck!
glad to hear he/she's eating.
I will happily view your photos when they hatch.

Oh, I forgot. I was awakened at 5:15 a.m. by the speckled sussex and his pitiful crowing. I put him and the other ss inside the coop and closed the pop door and he was quiet then. anyway, I put an ad on craigslist for 2 free roosters just now. the cochin is not crowing yet.

Wow, is that early? I look at my babies and still see them as babies. But then, it's a relief to know that mine are all girls... except perhaps the silkie. I'm suspicious of him. The little black walnut on his face is a little big for my liking. But he's still peeping like a newly hatched chick, so I guess I'll have to wait and see. I hope you find homes soon! They're so pretty!
So... I have a good friend who always asks to tag along when I do my preserving, because she wants to learn. This is the one that got stuck sharing in 25 hours of grapes last year, voluntarily. And she still came back! Aaaaanyway... I brought up how I'm trying to fill the freezer and dry storage, and she wants to learn how to blanch and preserve stuff... and I told her that she can buy produce and we can do all of ours together, including the older kids... (deep breath) So here's the point I'm getting to. Friends With Benefits, homemaker style. If anyone wants to preserve food and needs a little help or know-how, we have a small group of people that shares skills, then shares food. My friend took away 10 jars of peach jam last night. Another friend is willing to grind any corn I get this year, and I'll give her some of the corn. If anyone on here is interested in this sort of thing, let me know. My kitchen can only hold 3 people at a time, but there is so much shared knowledge and resources swimming around this place... if you want to share, let me know.

is 5:15 a.m . early or 11 weeks?
I guess there is quite a variation when crowing starts. the black/lav split ameraucana roo started fairly early as well but he was not as loud as the ss is. I think I'm going to close the pop door for the chick section of the coop tonight to keep him inside longer in the a.m and maybe put up a makeshift curtain over the window on the east side. I thought one of your other chicks was a rooster? that's good if it turned out not to be.

Well I now have 3 breeding pair of the standard pearl gray guineas, 2 white keets, and 2 powder blue keets. All are safely put up for the night. My first impressions are that I will never get between the most dominant male and his mate again! I have never seen such a nasty aggressive display in my life. Not to mention they have talons like velociraptors! That may sound like I've taken on more than I can handle but since I got them to kill/run off snakes, and scare off/alert me to predators I think they should work out quite well. Plus the little ones seen quite friendly. I'll try for some pictures tomorrow.
