Lady Amherst - pure breed or mutant? - Page 2

not that expensive im buying some cabot tragopans next year and there 1500 a pair

So I take it the Japanese Lady Amherst are a different variety than the Chinese such that they have different coloring?  If that is the case why have I not seen them before, and where could you even get them.  I think they are really pretty and was wondering how much expensive is.

I was thinking the same thing? Why have I not heard of 2 seperate color phases of amherst if this is to be the case??? I have been in this type of stuff for some 25+ years. Kind of looks like a cross up to me, Probley a dark throat golden over amherst. I have a young male right now that is red gold and amherst cross, looking fairly similar already....

will post some as soon as he's done feathering up, just to be sure. Right now, he's just looking that way. Went threw tons of searches last night trying to fine any pics , or info, reguarding a dark phase amherst , and came up  blank though. Either way, I'd do some heavy research on them if I we're you, before paying that much for a possible mix..

I think he's yanking your chain.There is no other phase of amherst.They do look like they are productive birds by the size of your flock.

Yes it's never ending and every seller seems to have a story of these are pure birds.I assure you,these are not in any way shape or form pure anything.The price you are willing to pay for them would determine if they are worth it.To me a red golden should cost more then a cinnamin golden as they are pure,but for some reason the mutations cost more, go figure.And don't even get me started on how many years of pure birds are lost because of cross breeding.Some people are just out for a buck and don't care about killing off years off pure birds.It's just sad.

I realize this is an old thread but I would not say those are not pure Amhersts. I would agree with Tony that pure Goldens and Amhersts should be worth a lot more than the mutations, especially when they are species crosses. The barring on the tail doesnt look like amherst or golden, the stripes are more strait and vivid. Obviosly they are fertile birds if you have that many though.
