Why do my hens squat when I go to pet them?

When I reach down to pet or grab a chicken they squat down and vibrate there feet on the ground. Sometimes they raise there butt real high...

Do they like think I'm going to mount them ?? Hahaha :p

It's a submissive behavior.

Yep they are telling you they are mature and ready to mate.  Mine do it even though we have a rooster.

My white leghorns do that too.

i agree with cybercat but it could also mean that the roo gets ruff with them if they disobey or try to get away

watch them in the morning and see.

One of my leghorns does it and I will pick her up and carry her around the yard and pet her.

I was curious as to what it meant.
