*Update* My dog may have cancer! :(

What a crappy crappy weekend. My German Shepherd pup (ok, 8.5 years old) developed a lump on her foot a few weeks ago. I took her in to the vet this weekend to have it x-rayed and it may be bone cancer

I feel like death just ran it’s finger up my spine. Tala has been my constant companion for almost 9 years! It’s not absolutely cancer, and I am waiting on test results from a biopsy and more expert review of the x-rays, but the initial look at the x-rays does not look good.

Uhg, I don’t know how to deal with this. I feel like this huge wave of panic is just below the surface and I’m barely holding on to control by my fingernails. What do you do when your best dog friend may die in a few months!? It’s not fair, I’ve bought her the best food, kept her in shape, had her vaccinations done and do my best to be a responsible pet owner. Why is MY dog going to potentially die due to an insidious disease when all of the irresponsible owners have their dogs for like 15 years!

I'm so sorry to hear your bad news, Coyote. Please keep us informed how things progress. Everyone here loves their pets a great deal, and most of us have lost a "loved one" and can do our best to sympathize with you.

Oh no.so sorry.......... cancer is NOT fair at all...... I will pray it is NOT cancer..........you have had some good long years with her.........and her you...... I will pray for you , it must be so hard ........
 
I'm sorry to hear about Talla, but If and I mean a BIG IF she does have cancer it does not always mean a death sentence, there are treatments available if you can afford to give them to her. I wish her all the luck and to you a speedy GOOD test result. Please keep us posted with the outcome. Laura
 
I am so sorry. Don't get ahead of yourself though, wait for the results and then go from there. I hope you get good news from the vet. Enjoy your dog friend every day that you have her and when the day comes that she is gone know that you were a loving friend to your baby and that she had a wonderful life with you. You are in my thoughts It is so hard to hear news like that about a loved one. :aww
 
I can feel for you...I've lost 2 of my cats this past year to cancer. When mine were diagnosed the vet said dogs and cats are very different when it comes to cancer....cats are usually dead within a year, but dogs often times will live many years after diagnosis and surgery....so keep your faith that she will be all right.
 
oh i'm so sorry to hear that.

my dogs have been with me 11 years and 10 years. both are from the pound. the one i've had for 11 yrs was an adult when i got him, so we have no idea his real age. but to me, they will always be my babies.

i will pray for your puppy and hope that its just a cyst or something. my coonhound mix has a huge tumor on his back, but the biopsy came back as a fatty tumor (lipoma) and that seemed to turn up overnight as well.

p.s. my hubby has a full blooded German Shep, who's also 8. he's got the hip dysplasia quite bad and can't do much anymore. my DH is devastated. so we know from where u come.
 
I'm sorry you have to feel this way, its never easy. We spent the big blizzard yesterday taking one of our dogs to the emergency vet hospital. I thought she was going to die in my arms from not being able to breath. she has allergies and must have some kind of infection causing severe congestion. I felt the same sense of panic because i knew a cat with similar symtoms that had tumors in the sinus's and that was one of the possibilities here too. She is responding to meds today, but i am still scared for her and i understand your panic. Just try to focus on enjoying your time with your dog now and be hopeful. Is it possible to lose the leg but not the dog? Best wishes for some good news

I'm desperately hoping that it’s not cancer, but there is malformation occurring in the bones of her foot. I was able to look at the x-rays and see for myself.

If it is bone cancer of some sort I’m at least hoping it is not an aggressive form. There are a few varieties that are aggressive and a few others that are not. The most aggressive form usually only effects one area of a bone, and the x-rays show bone deformities on two bones spreading across a joint. This could be a good sign. The vets said there is a possibility it may be arthritis…..So I’m trying not to panic at least until there is a definitive diagnosis.

On the bright side. My best dog friend is being looked after by my best human friend (she’s a vet). Unfortunately, when my best human friend starts to get upset at what she’s seeing it’s a really bad sign

If it is cancer I have to decide if I want to see if the effected toe can be removed, or if the entire limb should be amputated.

Has anyone had a leg amputated from their dog?
