I have had chickens ONLY since May 2008.  I am NO EXPERT!  I raise German Sheps since 1989.  I raise chickens with a dog breeder's mentality.  I breed for traits.  And put them all together and call it a burd.

As Bill advised, always keep a back up male. You will never need him. Never!

However, if you  disperse of your extra male, your remaining male will die, disappear, become sterile etc! And no one will have an extra for you. The old timers always kept extras, just in case.

There's just something really endearing about a gigantic rooster with a huge fluffy butt who is just sweet as can be! He's really sweet to the girls, too. He's been very into finding nesting spots for them lately, and it's hilarious to see him trying to squeeze himself into some really small spaces and trying to call the girls over to tell them to lay their eggs there. I wish he'd show them the nesting boxes.roll.png I am supposed to be picking up some bbs Orp chicks at the Carolina chickenstock in 2 weeks, so I am excited to be getting more!

You use him for now but always keep an eye out to improve your stock.  One problem I see many who show is they fall in love with their birds and it can make it hard to want to use another bird for breeding.  IF your just wanting to have them as pets then use him.  It is always a good idea to have at least 2 or 3 back up cocks just incase.

Keep enjoying the shows.  It is alot of fun, especially when you or your son does well.

I had a real nice talk with Pastor Romig this morning..adviing me on what i need to do and will be coming up to asess what i have going on..i told him i am still nieve in what im doing and need lots of help.....

he also said he went to a show out west a peice..he told me to tell a certian person that is really mad at me for reasons i dont really understand that they have some really good birds, but there is a little thing called a bath... dont get so mad at somone that you throw a bird of that calibre into a box and just show up.that bird deserved to be  lg fowl champion. conflict isnt an answer , explaining how you feel and discussing it is because."men who make peace are children of God"

was very glad the person stopped over to talk after the judging..

showing poultry should be both fun and educational and for the betterment of the breeds.

The 2 hens in with Thursty is one from Don' Chandler's breeding

Also like to thank Dawn Suiter for letting me have this beautiful Buff hen to use.

And this hen is from Terry Britt's breeding.

The 2 together with Thursty makes up my #2 Buff pen

On an interesting note far as breeding goes.  I am using a Buff Sport cock with 2 of my lessor quality Black hens to see what you get.  It appears to be some more Cuckoos.  Nice thing about that is I can use them in my White Orp program that I am just starting.  The genetic diversity is unlimited  I plan on moving in some of my #3 Black Orp hens in with this Buff Sport cockerel to up the quality level..

Hard to say Trailblzn.  His comb and wattles are still not fully developed judging by the color.  The cockerel I posted above is just nearing in on 7 months old.  And his wattles and comb are a bit bigger.  I would guess yours is near 5 to 6 months old.  just a guess.  No real way to tell without asking the breeder.

I am not too familiar on how these Lemon Cuckoos grow out.  Some of my cockerels have a very low profile comb and smaller wattles.  So, your may not be as big as the line of Buffs like Thurston.  His wattles are too big.  And his comb is now frozen away to look smaller but at one time it was larger then I like.  The young cockerel I have has about what I want.  So your male's comb and wattles may not grow out too much more.   The color when it becomes brite red will tell you he has reached maturity and of breeding age.  They still may grow some more but should not be too much more.

Good luck with him and take him to some Exhibition Buff hens to better the size and type and you will have a killer flock someday

On the LCO why is it some hens  hatch out barred and other do not?  I have an idea it is the amount of barring genes but am not sure.
