I answered a Craigslist ad by a local man who bought hatching eggs from two local breeders, incubated them, and sold them as straight run. He was quite adamant that they are true Ameraucanas, and made sure I knew there was a difference between these and easter eggers. So far so good, the babies are lively and a ton of fun, I've been busy building their coop so it's ready when they go outside. My question is, what colors will they be? Can you tell from this age? One is obviously white, but I'm not confident on ID'ing the others.

Oooohhhh! Please tell how you can tell gender! I'd love to know. I've got 3 Lavenders that are 3 wks old now and I'm 95% sure I know which one is a boy but that's only because he chest bumps my Faverolles boy all the time.

Easter Eggers can be sexed at hatch by their coloring, USUALLY.  There is a thread for EE with info.  Not so much with Ameraucanas he.gif

Good idea, except most people around here are back hill country hicks that won't pay $5 a chick.  They don't care what breed they are - they only want to pay $1-2 each.  I barely got $5 each for laying pullets under a year old (buff Orps, Speckled Sussex, Ameraucanas and some hybrids)!  I had one guy come and complain about $2 a rooster.  I told him straight out that if he took them 2 miles down the road and paid the lady $2 to process them, that's a cheap $4 meal tonight!  He shut his mouth and bought 5.

That's interesting.  I just sold 6 chicks about 2 hours ago.  Four of my breeds that I show went for $8 each and two Easter Eggers went for $5 each.  And that's not unusual for me.

And those are my prices for up to two weeks old.  After that the prices go up.  I easily get $12-16 for a pullet that's not laying and once they start laying, I always get at least $20.

God Bless,

I took my POL girls to Erin's MD swap in October and everyone was thrilled to find 'cheap' $10 POL pullets - from the hatchery!  I sold out in less than an hour.  I took some of the same girls to a swap 70 miles south of me here in PA before that and I put them up for $7.  I brought every one of them home.  Location, location, location!

Sorry to hear about your daughter.

That's one handsome guy. I'm about through hatching for the spring, so if you need to borrow some wheatens...

I have a black Ameraucana roo and a Lav hen and hatched this one chick out just to see what I would get. Shouldn't it be black?? Or does this mean my roo is a lav carrier?? Thanks.

I got some better pics of our boy. I posted last week about him. He looked much leggier in the pics than he does usually. I took really bad pics that day apparently. My Orp also looked too leggy, but my son won best LF at the show this morning with him, and I got asked to give my contact info by people who loved our Ameraucanas and told me they were very nice and it was hard to find Am's as nice as mine. There were others in the show, but I thought out did look better. ;) They actually were missed by the judges during the show, so they didn't get placed. :( They were placed on a back row by themselves b/c the others placed there did not show up, so I guess the judges just missed them. We'll see for the fall! Anyway, here are some better pics of our Happy, one of my son's birds. He named him when he was a fuzzy peep and we were hoping he was a girl. LOL. All of my oldest son's favorites turn out to be roos!

Anyway, here he is, better pics this time. LMK what you think and what I should be looking for for improving my birds for breeding. He is only 6 mos old, so I am sure he has a bit of filling out to do! I am hoping those people didn't give me a big head and he is as nice as I think he is! LOL. So feel free to put me in my place!
