Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds - Page 1716

Here are pics of the andalusian chicks that I am going to use for my laced blue ameraucana project.  They are 6 weeks old and come from parents that carry the full boat of lacing/pattern genes.  Just for reference.  So years from now when I am breeding my F2 or F3 generations I will know what 6 week old chicks look like that are carrying all the pattern genes.  lol

They are so cute!  I am going to keep a flock of just andalusians as well as my project birds.

They are gorgeous!  I can't wait to see what your F2's and F3's look like.  And what their egg colors are!

Well the good news is that andalusians lay white eggs.  So I will not be dealing with a sneaky group of brown egg genes.  I imagine the first F1 will be very pale blue.  The blue egg gene is dominant.   Also andalusians have white skin so no sneaky yellow skin genes hiding anywhere.  Andalusians have big fancy single combs so that is something that I will have to breed out.  But at least you can see when you have a single comb or a pea comb on a bird pretty quickly.

You will have to breed out the big white ear lobe though and that could be a struggle and it is a DQ for red lobed birds.

Oh yeah forgot to mention the earlobes. That too is at least an obvious thing to cull or breed for. All the talk I have heard of brown egg genes I will take earlobes any day over brown egg genes. Or the dreaded...green legs...gasp! Lol lol.

How dominant is the white earlobes? I just happen to have a mix that just started to lay, and she has white earlobes but lays brown eggs. I'm curious smile.png

It's pretty hard to get out.  The wheaten and blue wheaten lines still have it pop out and it has been years since they were created.

I don't know exactly what was used to develop them either, but enamel white still pops out.

I just got three lf silver laced dotte chicks to start my project and have some bantam eggs in the incubator.  I could have been started with my project about now if my cockerel hadn't have expired from this heat. :(

So many people are having heat exhausted chickens dying. It's very sad sad.png This has been a really HOT summer. This morning it was 100% humidity here. It is disgusting..

Sorry to hear you lost him. Did you have a backup cockerel?
