Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds - Page 1725

Question.. I have two all white females. They have the wrong leg colouring, but besides that, how is their type, and how hard is it to improve the leg colour by breeding them with a proper coloured male? I was hoping to start a little project to see if I can improve on them, as Ameraucanas are very, very hard to find here. Until then, I will continue to call them EEs.


Here is one in question.

Honestly in the long run it will be easier and cheaper to find some true bred white Ams to start fresh with. Never know when those legs will get right or pop up later down the road...IMO

They are beauties though!
 

uhmmmmmm, just want to point this out. My girl lays eggs that are THIS color, and she IS an ameraucana....so uhmmmm......yeah..... many different shades :) however, I would LOVE to have one that lays ^ those color eggs ...in time in time

 

It wouldn't be cheaper, as they would have to be imported or I would have to drive at least 18 hours to get them. Plus I don't like to take in adult birds due to biosecurity. I usually only hatch, or buy chicks.

It's not something I would consider selling as Ameraucana until I got it right and they breed true. I did buy them as Ameraucana, but he didn't cull ones that you would normally cull, so there's that..

and since we are talking eggs (above) One of the two started laying 2 weeks ago.

Ok so not all true ameraucana's lay blue eggs so how do you know they are true then cause a lot of EE can look like Ameraucana's if they are solid colored? I mean if you have a white bird that does not have green legs let's say how would you distinguish true from EE in this case? I am learning here and I was under the impression that True Ameraucan's lay blue eggs so i apologize if i offended anyone it was not my intention.

Nice!!!! And being white their legs may have just taken some time to come in to color? Although pink feet bottoms would be ok. Are you sure there was yellow??? Cuz that egg is amazing and the birds look good to type! Wish you the best, white isn't all that common near me either.

Yes I'm sure about the legs. I do have a rooster that is not white, but his legs are slate. I hope I get white from the crossing and keep the best white cockerel with the right coloured legs and breed back to the mothers. That should provide me with only white if bred white x white. At least that works with silkies. White to white is the same in Ameraucanas right? Ah I hope so...

Either way, EEs are lovely, and there are not a lot of those around here either. People like to have pretty eggs, and I know my girls can provide at least that much.

For now I will keep working on my bantam Ameraucanas.

The breeder did not keep his colours separate, which is a shame. I did enter these two in a fair judge by Merle Watson and he said they had great type, but the legs. Jamie Carson (also a judge) said to start the project, so that is what I plan to do. If many people are working on projects with lacing and such by crossing in other breeds entirely, this can't be any more difficult then that, right?

ETA: The rooster is an EE, with the right comb and leg colour. Thought I'd add that in there.

 

Ameraucanas DO lay "blue" eggs but "blue" can be subjective. Some blues may be a bit greener or paler than others. Ameraucanas must meet the breed description including colours (feathers, beaks, legs, skin, ear lobes, eyes, eggs, etc.), pea comb, muffs and beard, clean legs, etc. And they must breed true. So in order to really be sure the bird in question is an Ameraucana one should know who the parents are and what hatches in addition to observing the bird in question.
