I was looking in a hatchery listing and I saw Cherry Egger as one of their breeds.  I've never heard of that.  What's a Cherry Egger?

I believe it's another of the trade names for Black Sexlinks. They have so many! Wait, nope, I saw the picture. I'm wondering if it's a RIR/New Hampshire cross. Bet it's a production red type bird.

***Saw on Feathersite under the RIRs a pair of Cherry Eggers, also known as Production Reds.

Gee, how am I supposed to keep up with all these different names for things.  That's it, I'm going to breed some mutt chickens and come up with some weird name of my own.  That will teach them gig  Not only that, but it legitimizes my mutt breed gig

Thanks for the info.

LOL!
Why not?
People do it with dogs and sell them for big money...when labradoodles came out I said humane shelters need to get into naming the mix breeds they get really cool names and there would not be many left. People with nothing better to do than have "special new" breeds would scoop them up. Thus taking care of the tons of unwanted dogs. LMAO!!

He is rite. The Cherry Egger, Red Star, and Red Sex-link are all the exact same cross. All it is , is a Production RIR Cock Crossed with a New Hampshire pullet.

See New Hampshires were first developed from RIR as Line Breeding Increased and bad color genes came out of the dark almost black color of true RIR today .

Just wanted to post my two sense worth. We have both red sex link hens and a rooster as well as a Cherry Egger (Production Red Rooster) and our friend has 6 Cherry Egger hens we got them from Cackle hatchery. He also has 4 Rhode Island Red hens and you can't tell them apart, anyway none of us can.  Our Sex link hens are a much lighter red and much smaller build. There Cherry Egger hens are the same size and shape as there Black Australorp or however you spell that.

The rooster we have, Romeo, Is absolutly beautiful. Dark Red with black and Green tints to him. Our  Sex link rooster, Kramer, Is Huge, Twice the size of the rest of our chickens and he is White with some red coloring.

Our friends Cherry Egger hens lay an egg every day ever since they started last october.

4 dogs, 3 cats, 1 little banty hen, 15 ducks (anacona, muscovy, pekin, and Rouen ducks, Royal purple, coral blue, and Opaline Guinea fowl, lots of big rabbits, a miniature horse, a guinea pig , married to the only man who could put up with me and all my critters.

Reviving this dead thread... Cherry Eggers and RI Reds are THE EXACT SAME BIRD!!! I just placed an order with Cackle, ordered the CEggers and was disappointed to see them substituted for the RIReds.  When I wrote Nancy told me they are the same, just regional differences as to what they are called. Who knew!  well apparently Nancy did but...
