wing bands: Jiffy vs Zip UPDATED success!

i'm trying to decide which type of wing bands to buy. there are two that seem a lot alike to me but their applicators are different and have a $15 cost difference.

i like the Zip bands because they are silver, which seems less noticeable, but the applicator cost $15 more than the Jiffy applicator.

the Jiffy bands claim to be the most popular wing band in use, but they are $1 more/hundred and only come in brass or colors.

is there really a big difference in these two? is there a better option?

You just have to look around.......Culter Supply has them in silver (aluminum).

As far as the colors go--I have purple on my birds and I can't see them at all once the birds are adults and the feathers are grown over them. I like the colors because when I'm trying to find the band in the feathers it's easier to find.

The numbers are also easier to read on the color band versus the silver or brass.

I order my colored bands from Randall Burkey.
 
The Jiffy is a lot cheaper, and a lot better because the wing bands are actually permanent and tamper proof; if you look at the bend over thingy, it is automatically locked into place, whereas if you really needed to identify a bird, the Zip could be cut off.

so i bought the jiffy bands and now am at a loss as to exactly what i'm doing. they are so much smaller than i imagined! does anyone have a good link to application instructions that isn't a video (i'm on ridiculously slow dial-up)? or just some helpful advice? thanks.
 
Age doesn't matter, you can tag adults--the younger ones are just easier because it's easier to see what you're doing. I usually wait until they're fully feathered out, so your's sound about right.

I couldn't find any good pictures....

Do you still have the box? There's a pretty good picture on there.

You just want to go on the wing, close to the body and you'll feel a web of skin (head side). You want the tag to go in that web of skin--so between the outside cartilage strip and before the bone.

For a beginner it's easier if someone holds the bird for you

After a 100 you can do them by yourself
 
thanks bantams! i've got some help, so hopefully it will go smoothly. the box didn't have any pictures, but one of my books does. i'm just so afraid i'm gonna do something wrong and hurt one of them. just being nervous.
 
so, the job is done! it actually went rather well... unless of course all my chickens' wings fall off tomorrow.

they weren't the happiest campers about it, but it didn't seem to hurt them other than the initial jab. they did look awfully funny trying to "clean off" the shiny things stuck to their wings!
