I fully understand the pasty butt issue with new chicks...but what about a hen that is laying eggs each day...I can't tell if she has pasty butt, but it looks like there is some collection of poop near her rear end...

do hens get pasty butt too? Or do they outgrow that?

yeah, my buff orpington has pretty poofy feathers on her rear side...so maybe that's what I'll do too...can you trim too short and hurt them???

I'm sure that's it...her rear end looks like a giant poofy down pillow (with poop on it) Otherwise looks and acts very healthy...

***Can you trim those feathers too short and hurt the birds???***

One of my silkie often has a putty bottom, but I find it very hard to cut the feathers with scissors, so we plucked her (my hubby did!). Twice already!

Thats what I ment in some you can trim the feathers too short and it can hurt them. Cut or pluck it low enough not too hurt her.

being totally new to chickens, I'm not sure what low enough not to hurt her means...low down near her feet...low close to her bum hole? ??? do you have a photo of your chicken after a cut so I can see a visual?

Oh and try doing it by yourself. Picture me holding a chicken between my legs and trimming her rear.
