Lethargic chicken

I would like to comment that I am an older teenager and do not have time during the week, not complaining just telling. I do not know how to check the crop. Can't I use DE for the worming?

DE will not help if she is infested with worms. It is often used as a preventative, but not for treatment. You will need medicine. I would suggest you get mom/dad involved to help. We would love to try to help you, but you are going to need an adult to get you what you need for your hen.

I would also recommend a fecal sample taken to the vet to confirm she even has worms. She could have something totally unrelated going on as well and worming her during a weakened state is not good unless necessary. The white fecal matter is because of lack of food intake. That is her urates (urine) without poop. You can feel the crop on her chest (it should be roundish at night before bed and flat in the morning).

There are many things that could be diagnosed but without a full physical exam, it's anyone's guess what's going on with her. A vet is your best chance at this point, altho perhaps not an option.

do check the crop..it feels like a little bag or sac on the chest..
please describe how it feels..hard like balloon, soft ans squishy, grainy, or any bumps or lumps.
also check for a sour odor, or any whitish or yellowish spots in her mouth.

a fecal test (droppings test) isn't very expensive, and will tell you if she has worms and what kind they are.
if you have a vet for other pets, they might be willing to do it.

you mentioned in an earlier post, that you didn't want to lose another chicken.
what happened to the other chicken? were there others also?
please describe any symptoms they had.

how often, or how much do you feed your chickens?
do they have fresh water every day?

. the other chicken died from a dog attack we did take her to the vet a did get her sown up and she did live for awhile about a week and then her conditon spirled and she died . before she died she could not eat or drink and layed down all the time, but she died more than 3 months ago. we have food foor them in one of those 3 gallon feeders all the time in their chicken hut, they are free range and they have fresh water all the time. we cannot afford a vet.

A word of warning about feeding chickens dry food in a self feeder. I did that with my chickens and wasn't careful about cleaning the container. I would but the new food on top of the left over old food. Eventually all three hens died, one at a time over a peroid of several months. In hindsight I believe the container developed mold that killed them. Now I mix their food with just enough water to make it wet and I give them fresh food every day. I give them a powered organic food and they seem to be able to eat it better wet.
