I do it when they are dry, usually 12-24 hours after hatch.

At last, we finally are starting to see some activity.  We have 3 pips.  The first one happened sometime between midnight and 2am.  None zipping yet, lots of chirping going on.  Maybe it will be like a popcorn popper with chicks poppin out all over! LOL!
Sangel, did you use your plugs during hatch?  I have to keep both in just to keep my humidity at 60%.

I used one, and a LOT of sponges and wet clothes just to get it to 60. After the first pip it went to 64, and as they started hatching it raised to 65-72 without me doing a thing, and yesterday after the outage and the humidity was so high I tok them both out. I also added very warm water to my rags and sponges every few hours...that usually raised it by 2-3% anyway.

I lost another one. One of the others to hatch overnight that had the umbilical protrusion. I had tried to clean it's bottom off and gave it some water off my finger, but even then it didn't hardly open it's eyes, only minimal chirping and movement. I did the same to the other one that I have left like that and even though that ones is MUCH bigger, it doesn't have the string attached to it, and it's more yellow than red. IT also is MUCH more active than the other one had been so I am hoping it heals up. Someone posted on here about using prep H.. I may try that. For now he's in a box by himself in the brooder and I just got done disinfecting my bator...
the last egg was dead. After not hearing anything or feeling any movement I decided to pip the air sac and see if there was movement. Nothing. So I peel back enough shell to see that it had pipped the air sac and the membrane but never the shell. Looks like it may have not had enough strength to pip through the shell and then it dried out. And it was starting to smell- another reason why even though it was only a day late that I dessected it.

So that leaves my total at 9 out of 15. :-( Not near as good as when we started lockdown. What a tough time they've had though. And I am still not sure about this other one but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed!

Corny, good luck, keep us updated!!!

Also for now, since hatching is over, I am leaving my camera on the brooder for the time being so cuties can be seen there :-) I swear I'll do pics soon, more of my family coming for Christmas today tho so IDK when...

5 white leghorn hens, 1 RIR roo, and 5 of their babies (4 hens, 1 roo) mostly all of them light golden colored or light brown with black flecks throughout (11wks). Planning another hatch in May '10! (PREVIOUSLY)

NOW.... 2 pekin ducks and 4 Buff Orphs....all almost 12 weeks old, unsure of sexes!

I came home from town yesterday (was out for like 5 hrs) to find momma on a different nest (with no eggs) and her eggs were cold.  I put them under her anyway in case they were still good.  So then, this morning, I went out to do my rounds and found her on a different nest again and her eggs were cold... again!  I thought for sure they must be no good so took them inside and candled.  I saw no movement in them and was sure they were dead.  Then, I decided to open one up and see how far it made it... yeah, it was still alive and I killed it.  I feel ashamed of myself.  I should have trusted in momma, I guess.  This is my first hatch and so I don't know anything.  Anyway, the little chick lived for a bit and I was trying to come up with ways I could save it... ran out to get the heat lamp and all that but by the time I got anything set up, it was gone sad  Poor little chicky... and it was a perfect little one, too... pretty big yolk sac still so probably just needed another day or two.

Anyway, the other egg is back under mom and I'm hoping it makes it through.  If not, I guess better luck next time... or just buy from the hatcheries.

brandybaby23:  If all eggs have hatched then drop the incubator temp to 95 degrees F & can leave for 12-24 hrs.  Congrats!

I'm sorry you lost one.  That would be a tough call with mom nest jumping!

I would still definately consider your hatch a great success!  I hope mine ends up as good.  I have been using a turkey injector syringe to squirt hot water down over my sponges every couple of hours and I have the bator sitting on a rubbermaid lid to catch the water that leaks out of the bottom holes.

Our first chick has hatched!  He is the one that pipped between midnight and 2am.  Once he started zipping, it only took him 20 minutes.  We have 6 pipped.
