What kind of heat lamps can you use for baby chicks?

I have used both the reptile lights and the red brooder lamps.
With the reptile lights I used a 100 watt bulb while they were small and then went to a 60 watt bulb as they got older.
The red bulbs that are sold in the feed stores are all 250 watts and I use those also in the cage type lamp.
I never turned my brooder lights on for 24 hours before bringing home my chicks and as said it does not matter what you brood them in for material.
I have used the white and red and never saw a difference in any of my chickens.
Don't worry about it too much, get what you have access to as long as its within the wattage guidelines for chicks.

Is this safe? I have seven chicks(growing up inside a plastic bucket big enough for them) they stay inside unless it's nice and hot outside then the bigger chicks around six weeks go outside for sunshine and come in at night for heating pad on cage. The seven babies i have, have a cardboard box as house(I'm worried though) and a fan at one side with their water keeping it cool. My room is naturally cold so I hung their 250W heat lamp(no protector) from the ceiling on a sturdy hook and away from them being able to jump(its on the side without the box, just wood chips and very few) but I'm worried if any of that is safe and if not what should I do. Myadult Male rooster occupies the only coop because we have no females to nest the babies and he tries to jump them
