DWs I can find is in the banties and my flock is large fowl and not mixed.

Please help!  I'll post a pic of the "odd" chick with a sibling a little later.

Where did you get your chicks from?

Silver Duckwings are being worked on by a few breeders here in the US. The color pattern is very similar to the Silver Duckwing OE chicks.

There has been some cases people hatching out Welsummer eggs from one or two breeders (past posts revealed the differences) and they had to cull it out. If the parents and the background are pure breeders (non hatchery type) stock, it should be culled out or put in the egg laying flock or give it to someone who would appreciate a pretty roo for their flock of hens. This link will take you to people that had similar problems with pure Partridge colored and got a "surprise" chick. http://wcna.webs.com/chicks.htm

The Standard of Perfection of the Silver Duckwing would be the same for LF if bantam standard was given. The website of the England's link: http://www.welsummerclub.org/Standard.htm and scroll down a bit to find the Silver Duckwing plumage section.

Please do submit a picture of the Silver Duckwing chick...I am wanting to add it on the WCNA website.

Erhard Wiehs is working on the Duckwing (both in Gold and Silver) patterns in his Welsummers. So if you get your eggs/chicks from him, there is your answer. Even it is not accepted in this country but they are the true Duckwings that has not been crossed over by another breed to get the color effect. I know he is working on it and you should continue to work on it as well.

I thought I would ask the Welsummer experts - I have two chicks that are both 6 weeks old that look like this one.  Are they pullets or roos?  Or is it too early to tell?

bobbieschicks.......those are both cockerels.

Breeding Welsummers and Barnevelders.

Having an Icelandic in the coop is like having a 2 year old in the house - they are into everything and don't follow the rules.

I have zero chicken willpower.

Thanks, I figured as much, but I was so hoping I was wrong.  Bummer.  Seems like all my recent chicks have been boys!

I've found it rather discouraging for someone to ask what the sex of the birds are and have to listen to everyone chime in with the fact that they are cockerels.  So I won't do that, I'll just tell you not to expect eggs.

When having problems with chickens stop and think, what would Harlan do?
I've dealt with many thorns in my life and the flower is always worth the effort.

Thank you for sparing me smile.png

However all may not be lost as today I was encouraged to find out my black AM may very well be a pullet. If I take my AM pullet and let one of these handsome Wellies mate her, well then I may just get some olive eggs, another color I've been wanting for my flock. A slight trade off considering I really wanted the dark wellie eggs. Guess I will need to try again once I have another broody.

Only next time I'll be sure to order only the eggs with pullets inside wink.png

So that's where all the pullets are - just kidding. Once my broody starts up again I'm sure I'll be contacting you for some more hatching eggs. I definitely still want a dark layer or two.
