If these don't hatch I may have to get on your list for some. Are you coming to the swap next Sat?

A pair of welsummers where my very first chickens and even though I moved on from them they stayed in my head the whole time.

The rooster was my buddy as well as the hen they got a great home and are living the life. I think that is what stayed with me was how much they can bond with you.

So here I am hoping to have a nother go with them now that I know what I'm doing.

Hope y'all don't mind me hanging around feeling out the breed again and getting as much info as I can again.

Glad to see you on this thread. I think this is one of the friendliest thread on BYC.  Everyone is very helpful and supportive.  I started with hatchery Welsummers, but didn't like how they looked, or the egg color.  I swapped Buckeye eggs for some of Nate Vanwey's eggs, and ended up with some really nice stock.  I learn a lot from thsi thread and from the helpful experts that participate in the thread.

I'm not going to the swap, its just too far from Charleston.  DH went two years ago and picked up some of Peachicks chicks for me, but it was a long trip, 6 hours.  We're having a monthly sale here in our area and its doing pretty well gaining momentum.

My first two where from the swap but I think the hens mom had a one night stand with a non welsummer when she started to lay the eggs where cream with dark spots.
That's why I sold them. The first 7 eggs looks like 3/4 will grow but the other the air cells don't look good and think 1 is a blood ring. It's early on them so left them till I can tell for sure.
I am really happy with the egg color so I hope some hatch. I just set the other 14 so will be a while on them. Sorry you can't make it but I understand the drive is long.
Glad to see y'all got the swaps going good up there. How are the ducks doing?
Also thanks for letting me know about the thread the jg thread is the same way.
Can't wait to meet everyone.

Caught a few photos of the girls a couple days ago out free ranging and playing around and thought I would share.

Here is my youngest girl who I do not believe that I will be using for breeding. Not altogether happy with her egg color. It's a lovely light Terra Cotta color and not the deep rich color that I was expecting, but she is a nice girl.

#8 the Trouble Maker and despite her name she is one of my favorite chickens. :)

and can't remember which one this is as she lost leg band, but I believe she is #17. Geesh! LOL!

Thanks Fay. I like her too. She is a good girl even though she is always into trouble. :)

I thank you for clarifying that....I thought he was working to "improve" the Silver and Gold Duckwing Welsummers. Isn't that what breeders should do if that is all the genetic pool they had from England/Germany? I hope they are on their way, even it may be a long shot, but I know he CAN do it.

And, I'm fairly confident and believe safe in saying that even if he was crossing the Gold or Silvers with his Standards, he wouldn't be shipping eggs from the cross without asking first if someone wanted them.  I think Erhard is still doing mostly flock breeding vice linebreeding as I do but even then I know he still has his birds separated and I can tell you that his Gold and Silver Welsummers aren't anywhere in the vicinity of his standard Welsummers.

God Bless,

I've got an  uncle and his family living in Pirgutsville, WV, probably not too far from you.

I was going to see if hubby can pick up chicks on the way back from Tamarack next year for you on his way back home but its too far out of his way. However we ARE planning on going to Gettysburg in July, 2013! If we can work up something, we might be able to stop somewhere on the highway and wait for you to pick up chicks. However you might be better off getting some hatching eggs from her.

Moved the Lav Ameraucanas and Wellies in the rabbit hutch out of the shed. It was all new for them! LOL! Just beautiful! And they certainly got the copy cat traits of Nate Vanwey girls I have!

Hello all,

Questions, how often do your Wellies go broody? I have one that just hatched 6 Wellie/ FBCMARAN Xs. She also hatched a lavender Ameracana/ FBCMaran, this should be a dark olive egg. What do you think the color will be like on the Wellie/FBCM? And now i have another one going broody. Wish I had a Wellie Roo. Guess I will have to get some eggs to hatch from the breeders here in Florida.
