I got mine from a feed store. I wasn't sure what he was. I thought a Silkie because he had a little knot on his head. When I suspected that he was a sultan, I was thrilled. The more research i do, the more interested i am. I am still waiting for a hatch notice. That should be in Feb. sometime.

any pics of ideals sultans anybody??

I have a trio of hatchery Sultans, I got them from the feed store ( I heard they got them from Ideal). I started out with 6, but the foxes or hawks got a couple of the pullets and one died as a baby. I was so glad one turned out to be a boy!
I had a little white Silkie hen I wanted to breed to my Sultan roo for Sulkies, but she was eaten also. I'm not having much luck with white chickens!
My two hens lay very well, they just started laying and they give me an egg every day!
Out of all my chickens these are my DH favorites, and I love them too.

Flora, your Sultans are wonderful. My Roo, Louie-Lu-Li looks like yours. Your hens are just what I am looking for.

My boy needs his own kind. I also had hoped that my baby's would all get along. The girls started pecking at his feet . They drew blood, ad would not stop pecking at it. I had to give him RX treatment right away. I put him in ICU for a couple of days, his feet were looking like they were healing already. He was Lonesome. I moved him back to his pen with his flock. The Little Roo, Black Frizzle Bantam Cochin, Name of Bat Man, started pushing him around and pulled at his head and chest feathers, wrapped his neck over Louie's neck and held his head down. He would not let him move. All this time he is making a clucking sound, that I had not heard before. Bat Man, then let him up. He Clucked at the girls, they came running over and started pecking at his feathers. They pecked him every place. Louie stood perfectly still the whole time. All the while Bat Man was watching. It was like he was holding him in a trance. Those girls starting pecking his feet until they got a toe bleeding again. I had his feet coated in Vaseline. The girls would peck him and wipe their beaks on the ground, and do it again. One after the other. he couldn't get away. I finally caught the little fellow and put him in a large cage inside the pen. I could not believe how mean those girls were.

They all have been together sense day one. It was like putting a brand new chicken in with them. Any how, I have him back in ICU. That hutch is in with the big chickens. I think those girls would hurt him. I need to make him a pen area so that he can get back on the ground. I am wanting his own kind of girls and him the head Roo.

IMO, Sultans are a weak breed. My pullet got sick 3 times when she was very young. Gave her some VetRX and she was okay after all times, but still. My first roo got sick, and in his final hours of life, I left a cup in his isolated crate where he resided during his sickness, and he got his head stuck and didn't have the stength to get it back out.

I'd take it back if I could, a thousand times I would. What a good boy he was.

Before he got sick, when he was a young cockerel, he earned his name-sake. He was picked on by other birds-and they went after just one foot. So he became Fuzzy Fur Foot-for only having feathers on just one of his feet. But what a sweet boy! Definately my favorite rooster I've ever owned. The next winter a hen seemed to have a random obsession with his crest feathers and pecked most of them off. Needless to say, that taste ended right then and there and Fuzzy grew his feathers back in a few weeks. He took quite a few beating on several occassions. How ironic that his death occured when he was far too weak to save himself, when like many times before he found the hidden will to continue on.

Many don't suggest cresteds to begginers because they require different care-sometimes more care. They can have a hard time seeing in some cases which deter people from getting them. But really, I just give them haircuts and they're on their merry way. Very enjoyable birds. Mine have been friendly, human-trusting, and very rewarding. We're up north and they do fine here. I've never had any reason to doubt Sultans but Polish-although friendly-can be a little tempermental sometimes.
