this week end should start the mass number hatches of 150 plus per week, actually just set about 300 tonight, a hova bator and a half, without trays and 4 trays in a sportsman, oh make that 2 and half hovas, forgot I had to get the last one out of the closet. One whole spare bed room is just incubators running now.

Dont know what I'm gonna do with all of them, guess I'm going to have to cut back on the project colors for a bit, setting way too many of them at the moment...

Hi everyone,

I got these off CL yesterday for free! I think it's 2 boys/1 girl....

Boy 2

and a girl, I hope!

DSCN1226.JPG

I ended up getting 3 Quail, 2 Porcelain DUccles (but I think they are both guys) 2 Mottled Cochins (also both guys) and a pair of Bantam EE pullets. I took all the boys just to help her out for giving me a pair of D'Anvers and the 2 bantie EE's for free!

I'm going to try and rehome the Porcelain Boys...and one of the D'anver boys and of the two Mottled Cochin boys, one will stay and one will go.

BBB- It's so weird how I was just asking you about them, and then saw some on CL for free...granted they are hatchery from McMurray but it's a start!

1 Weim,1 Pomeranian, 2 Cats,2 fish tanks, flock of 30(or so ) BLRW chickens, flock of Banties(Cochins,Showgirls,Greylegs and Silkies), Flock of Ancona Ducks (B&W,Lav & W),Flock of Mallards (Blue Fawn and Restricteds) 6 Muscovies, 3 Narragansett Turkeys,2 Geese(Toulouse), 2 Budgies,2 zebra finch, 2 Cockatiels.... and oh yeah, 5 great kids( 2 have flown the coop) and an enabling hubby

I can't even wrap my head around that many, but I'd be happy to take any off your hands too.  LOL

I will apologize before I even ask some questions, as I'm sure they have probably already been asked and answered on this thread.  If so please steer me to where to look, but is there a cheat sheet of sorts for colors you can cross or if you do what you might get this D'anver's?  I know there is the cross breed of chickens calculator, but I can't ever make head or tails of it.  I'm sure if I read through all of these pages of Post, esp those of BBB would be very enlightening, but I would love something to refer to or help me make an mental visual map in my head?  As I'm going to be getting my Mille and Porcelain eggs soon, my goal isn't to become a big breeder.  It would be nice to have an ideal to begin with maybe colors that you can easily add or not.  Not sure if this was understandable, I just find the color development intriguing and would like to learn from everyone.

Thanks

Melissa

no problem with asking a question 1 time or 20 to me, always happy to answer them.

1) any 2 colors can be crossed and worked with, you just have to have a goal and know which two to place.

2) very few come out a new color the first cross, black is very common, to get to your end goal it takes 2-6 years on average.

3) the chicken calculator is the best way to do this. When they list of colors comes up, pick a male and a female color and click calculate

it gives the outcome to almost 100% accuracy. now cross chicks back together or chick to parent and do it again, so on and so on.

There's no quick way to tell you this and that makes this.... It just takes time learning it all.

mille to bb red makes buff columbian in 1 cross

blue or dun  to cuckoo males will give you blue and dun cuckoos right off, pretty much that's all I can think of in a 1 time cross

the rest take multiple years of breeding, picking and back crossing, always keeping up with who came from what. Will be happy to walk you threw any particular goals. If you have a color in mind, just ask, will be glad to tell you how to make it. That's about the easiest way to do it
