d'anver lovers,discuss the breed and post some pics! - Page 384

Okay I am having issues and I think it is me...dogs being stupid, a cockerel being an idiot which cost him his head this evening...Maxwell finally made the mistake of attacking my silkies in the pen and then "showing me his feet" then the idiot ran out of the coop door and smack into the yard where he met 13 lbs of Lancelot and 11 lbs of Hector...So I saved him from the boys and nhad hubby dispatch him.  But this is what gets me about recent events....

Lady calls about CL ad for Idiot and my OE pullet...I told her he was flighty and NOT a lap chicken and etc...she was fine with that.  She shows up with a toddler who wants to chase and pet all my birds who are free ranging.  So I told the lady she could not have Maxwell.  She got pissy with me and I apologized, gave her 5.00 for gas to come all the way out here, I offered to give her any one of the Orps, Delaweggers or d'Anvers she wanted and said I would not sell him to her and have her daughter get in a pen with him and him attack her or hurt her  The woman was MAD AT ME and started shouting so I raised my voice saying "You cannot have him!" and my hubby came over and asked what was wrong and she said "Your wife will not sell me her birds" and I said "She wants Max and Mattie" and hubby looked at her daughter and said NO absolutely not.

Now I ask you...what the hello is wrong with people.  I climbed in the temporary pen and tried to grab Max showing her what an idiot he was and she still wanted him because he was so beautiful.  No cares about the safety of her kid, sheesh stupid stupid woman!

But, does not matter now because Max is dead and my coop is finally peacefully but what on earth am is wrong with me....why am I attracting the idiot dogs and idiot humans?  I am a nice person (except of course to JJ but that is hair legged war  :) ), I treat people fairly, I love and care for my animals and I try to teach people how to care for their birds and I am a softee....I give birds to kids all the time for pets.  Why me? 

I am thinking of keeping an extra d'Anver male aside from Zeke....can I get your opinions on these two boys

Male #1 ...I like his body carriage and coloring...temperament is pretty good too

Male #2  - Good temperament and I like his markings

I have several good lookin boys to choose from....

Your pics are a little dark and grainy, but from what I can tell, #1 has a nice chest and carriage on him. #2 looks to have lots of white at this point, too much, but I'm not sure how that will play out as he matures.

Have you checked combs on these? Does #1 have the smooth one or is he getting some "knobbies" on it? My Ace has a more smooth type comb than I like.

a buff columbian is a  mille with out white spots, though it shouldnt have black spots either.  They look to be mottled based to me though.

Though not a black mottled for sure, those look like penguins.  I'll bet it does end up being some kind of mottled looking bird though. Doesnt look to be any true color.

quail are columbian based too though, so quail to a  columbian, if I'm thinking right here, should have gave more columbians??? Not sure what the heck those are??? I also see the white patched one looks to have feather stubbles on the leg. Sure it's from d'anvers?

Now the darker solid chick does look about right for a quail x columbian cross, if it was just that one you were talking about, then it looks correct for the cross.

 

 

Cnythia, to your questions about longevity, 10 years on some here. most seem to keel over before then, 8 years is a decent life. 10-14 is out of the question though. I've had lots of them make it to 14ish over the years.

Hate to hear about the coccidia. It's horrible here. I loose a ton of chicks every year too it, even with medicated starter and daily treatments in the water... still loose them to it... think I have a super strain of it here. But it happens to all of us.

I thought a buff columbian was a solid coloured buff bird with black in the hackles and tail? If thats not the case, what is a solid buff with black in the hackles and tail? As I want one!

Anyway, I rechecked the eggshell and it wasn't from that batch at all, it was from the batch of lavender quail d'anver eggs, nearly all of which have hatched with d'anver combs and hairy legs, just one is totally clean legged. I have the one hairy mottled chick, one clean legged very dark lavender, one hairy white and one hairy lavender. The seller refunded my money but remains confused.

And all these came out of eggs that were 'supposed' to be lavender quail. :/

Any guesses????

Edited to say....The mottled chick has already started growing those little wing feathers, some feathers are white and some are black.

Aubrey, looks like I have a trio of crele. How do I want to work them? Cross with bb red or keep them togeather. Also I have one brown red pullet what are my options with it?

I am liking male #1 a lot but I cannot let My Little Love Rufus see me paying any type of attention or affection to the boy of course because Rufus is and shall remain my little love but he has 4 d'uccle women that he is very fond of and I am looking for the male to keep with my trio of little pullets.  I have Zeke picked out but I want a back up ya know.

Cyn...that one coch'anver boy...I am ready to give him the Maxwell treatment...what a spazz but he is sweet once you catch him.  LOL

How is his pattern looking so far?
