Irresponsible pet owners make me sad...chick related.

That's horrible! There's a situation the lady I work for is dealing with now, but surrounding the care of exotic birds. Supposedly there is a "bird rescue" near me and they have seven trailers filled with parrots. No heat, being fed dog food, and dirty waters. Supposedly the cages are filled with several inches of poop.

My friend/boss has been trying sooo hard to help this woman clean her act up. Unfortunately AC won't do a thing about it because they have food, water, and shelter. Parrots are tropical birds! They can't survive in the conditions where I live. My friend along with friends of hers have spend thousands of dollars trying to buy birds from her just so they can have a decent life. She doesn't give them vet care of anything and some have horrible looking sores on their bodies. It's just a horrendous situation! Luckily SOMEONE is trying to help!

BTW, here is the website for that "bird sanctuary" I was talking about. Sounds like a wonderful place, but the "office buildings" mentioned are actually used trailers she gets for a reduced price. It just goes to show you that you can't always trust the internet!

THIS is a REAL Parrot Foster place:

Arlee, these folks should have been spade and/or neutered themselves! They obviously have no clue about how to take care of an animal, let alone a child...
The cavalier attitude of "it died" just makes me wanna punch a wall! WTH is wrong with these people?!

I work at a petshop. I spent an hour at least twice with a customer trying to tell her what she needed to add some finches to her life. I talked her out of Cheech, who I knew would NOT be taken care of properly...I said he was too loud and she wanted "quiet" birds. So we picked out a white female and another pair of regular coloured Zebra finches...now the loudest sound they make is "EEPEEPEEEPEEP! and it's sweet. I sold them to her WITH care sheets and told her that we could take them back if they weren't exactly what she wanted. I even told her that they could be messed because they like to stomp around in their food.
A month later, she comes back in and I say "Hi how are your Zeebs doing?" She gave me attitude and said "I GOT RID of Them! They were too messy!" Now I had warned her...
And she was telling me that I hadn't said anything and that I TOLD her that we would take them back and Goddess only knows where they went...did I mention that she had a non housebroken little fluffy thing??? Now THAT is a mess!
I had to walk away before I went to jail.

Editted for a family site...

Yep - I'm really tired of hearing 'oh, it died'. Like "oh it broke".

Frankly if it was some inanimate object breaking over and over again, I'm betting they wouldn't just keep on replacing it....

They consider the lives of these animals less important than a TV or washing machine, etc.

Sad.

And, it looks like that one bird rescue is a great example of now rescues can quickly turn into 'hoarding' where the animal are no better off than they were originally.

I think a lot of people get into rescuing animals with very good intentions, but then can't ever find a home 'good enough' to adopt them out to, even though they aren't in a great situation in the 'rescue' either anymore as conditions get more and more crowded and funds are inadequate. I've seen this in other animal rescues - where they were so picky about who they would adopt out to that they never seemed to get any animals OUT but kept on bringing in the new ones.

There was a place here that made national news about being a great bird sanctuary. They never adopted out any of the birds - it was strictly a sanctuary forever home. After the national exposure they got so many people wanting to give them their parrots, etc that they had to close the doors to new rescues. Eventually they had to adopt out most of the birds, against their initial policies not to, and shut the doors to new surrenders. I believe they are down to less than 100 birds now, from over 300 at one point. They got tons of 'surrenders' but after the initial flash in the pan media coverage there weren't the funds coming in to support all those surrenders.

i agree, keep reporting the situation(s) to animal care and control - call several times a week until they actually respond.
it's horribly sad. i don't get why people like that even want the responsibility of an animal - it doesn't seem like they would get much joy out of having the pet anyway if they just tie it out back and throw it some food and water . . . i don't get it.
anywhooo - do what you can and send lots of positive energy toward that puppy. the sad truth is that when it dies they will surely just go and get another one.
that's why it's important to report the situation to animal control. eventually these folks may end up with a court order that says they cannot have any pets. but it takes persistence.
and/or, try also, to do your best to educate these folks. this can be challenging, i know but sometimes you can achieve great little victories.
for instance, i FINALLY convinced my neighbors to have their black lab neutered because he was busting out (literally) of their back yard several times a week and guess who would come home and find him in her front yard waggin' his tail and looking' for love? (yup, me!). it took a year but they finally did have him neutered. we offered to pet sit for free if they would have it done so that he could come over and play (safely) with our dogs and that may be the thing that finally convinced them to go ahead and do it.
anywhoo, my point is that just keep at it in any way you can.
thanks for caring!

They should be banned forever from owning animals. Its just sad how many animals had to suffer.

It does sound like parvo, which is highly contagious. I would mention your suspicions when you call animal control.

Sadly, there isn't much you can do other than keep reporting them. Often a long paper trail is needed to amass enough evidence in cases like this to eventually prosecute someone. While your report may do no good for this unfortunate pup, it may help save the next one they bring home.

I'm sorry you have to see this.
