purple eggs???

I've read this entire old thread. I want pink and purple eggs too! My new EE (Ideal chicks, listed by them as Ameraucana) pullets, are scheduled to be here this week. I've just recently been "educated" by the "real Ameraucana" folks that my chickens won't be "true Ameraucana" chickens. Just because they aren't likely to conform to the recognized breed standard colors? :smackWhatever, since my understanding is that the Ameraucana breed is actually derived from crosses of Auracana with other layer breeds. Anyway, I'm not likely to be breeding, as I technically live in the city and am not allowed a rooster, but I will be potentially trading with others in my area. I'd like to have some idea what to look for to maximize my odds at getting my rainbow in an egg carton colored in completely.

Good luck to all you pioneering dreamers out there breeding towards your goals! That's how every recognized breed gets started. :bow:love Keep calm and chicken on!

As to the Ameraucana/EE debate...usually the difference is huge. In color, pattern, egg laying, temperament, and such. However, in some cases it can be silly...like when two true Ameraucana produce a chick that doesn't quite fit the standard it has to be called an EE.

Good luck on your colored egg hunt

Thank you for your well wishes, Alaskan. Judging by what's on offer locally, I won't have any problems getting everything except medium-to-light purples, and yellow-to-golden. Time will tell.

Most hatchery lines are proto-Ameraucanas when the breed was not yet accepted into the APA and the breeders had to keep changing things to make the APA happy; everything from how to spell the breed's name to making it more different than the Auracana... so don't worry about the people who hate on the hatchery lines, they are not usually being helpful.

Have fun!

Ok, I see this thread has been going on for many years. Has anyone one figured out how to get these purple/plum egg layers into the US.? Or is there some to contact to get chicks or hatching from here in the US.? If so please send me an email [email protected].

Very nice

Thanks Mahonri - I do have some interesting colors. Here's some that people describe as purple or really pink - plus some gray ones and some olive eggs. All the birds that laid these have the same two parents - an EE mom and a BCM dad.

Those are so COOL! I love them! What color did the EE mom lay?

The EE mom lays a large light green egg as seen in photo below.

I hatch all of them and the offspring all look different from one another and each lays a different colored egg. I've been hatching the olive eggs and selling both chicks and eggs because I get more olive eggs than I do purple or gray. The olive eggs tend to produce babies that "LOOK" * like Copper Blue Marans (females) or pure Black Copper Marans (males) and it seems to be a sex-link trait. Most haven't gotten old enough to produce their own eggs yet so I don't know what color the next generation will lay. But I may have to start hatching the purple and gray eggs just to see what I'll get from them.

*Legal disclaimer - "LOOK" means they "look" like pure breeds - obviously they are not - so I call them my "Olive Eggers". (Just don't want to ruffle the feathers of those who like to correct anything that has to do with Marans.) These are mixed-breed mutts who happen to lay beautiful colored eggs.
About 15 years ago, I had some Easter Eggers that I got from a hatchery in New Mexico. They laid blue, green, lavender, yellow, peach, pink, red and other color eggs. Those chickens are
Long gone, and that hatchery told me they now get their Easter Eggers from a farm that breeds for blue eggs. Does anyone know of a place that has Easter Eggers that produce lots of different pastel colors? I sure wish I had some of those again.
Thanks

Wow, I don't know of one, but if you find one, please report back here.
