Nope not silly, it is to protect a hens back from an over eager Rooster.  Not all need them but sometimes a boy with pick a girl and just not leave her alone and the saddle protects her back.

Oohh thanks. :) I will probably not need one then. What would happen if a New Hampshire bred with a Barred Rock? Would it look like a BR or a NH or would it be a combonation?

If the roos is a NH and the Hen a BR you will get sex link.  All the roos will be barred (hatched with spots)  Not sure, but I think the pullets would be black.  If the BR is a roo and the NH hen, all chicks will be barred probably with some red leakage.

:D I will have to breed Lily (the NH rooster...*facepalm* (/).<)  ) and Petrie the BR hen at some point.  I saw a pic of Barred Rock New Hampshire crosses. I want one XD

Are you talking about a Hampbar?  that takes several breeding certain ways to get that look.

Your on the right track anyhow use the NH male over the BRs then take a F2 BSL male cross back to NH females and you should get a some that resemble Hambars its a numbers game the more you hatch the more the odds of getting buff barring to show up.

Jeff

There's a whole world of differences between propagators and breeders. My goal is to propagate breeders towards the Standard of Perfection.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, you can make a purse out of it, but it won't be silk. LOL

Maybe in about another 30-40 years I'll get this "being an expert" thing figured out by then. LOL

Here is our 7 week old again.
Roo or hen? I think Roo but my hubby said 'it just doesn't act like a rooster'.
I think it does. And those wattles showed up at around 3-4 weeks old.
Bright yellow legs and the spikes on them stick out a tiny but more than the others.
It's also on the 'lighter' side of a barred rock as far as color.
