Screamin' boy.

Cavernous nostrils are a Polish thing, yes, or really, an any crested breed thing.

That one there is a boy as girls actually don't develop a true butterfly / leaf type comb (that's not a V comb. V combs have only the two points to make a V or Y shape) plus he's got no cavernous nostrils and yeah, bright red and well developed comb paired with such nostrils.

I'd almost say that's a buttercup comb but I doubt it. I have a feeling it will separate and span out to the sides as he gets older.

Yep, kind of what I was afraid of. hmm.png  The red comb has only developed in the last week. I know for sure it is part polish since the only crested breed the breeder had on the property was a polish roo. I guess we will see how he develops. Likely we will sell it though.

I know I already have an Ameracauna roo in my chicks that will be gorgeous. Technically it is an EE because it came from 2 different colored parents but it is pure Ameracauna. It's white and seems to be staying pure white too. I have a pullet from that same pairing too. Both of those chicks are staying white so far. That roo I have known the gender of since he was 3 weeks old. I definately plan to keep that cockeral. I really don't want to keep 2 roosters this time. We just got rid of both of our adult roosters to make room for a new rooster from the chicks we have.

Happily married since 2006. Mommy to 3 boys! Currently own 5 EEs, 2 RIR, 1 NN, 1 Frizzle, 2 Ameracaunas,  2 Cochins, 2 Leghorns, 1 Polish, 1 EE/Polish mix, 3 goats, a dwarf hamster, and a pitbull/boxer mix.

This here is an F1 cockerel, Polish x Ameraucana. He's got cavernous nostrils. If you look closely you can see that instead of a flat surface around the nostrils that conforms well with the shape of the beak, they peak up and the nostril hole itself looks kinda enlarged and maze-like, like a human ear.

A cavernous nostril will make it difficult for a cross to sex, however a normal nostril will make it easy to sex them by comb. The one above, like most pea combed pullets, has a very small hardly noticeable comb, males will already peak with some toothiness.

If the bird has cavernous nostrils best to sex by color, if they're not solid colored birds. The cockerel above is so because he has solid more orangey reddish feathers coming in on his shoulders than the golden brown in the rest of his body. These are male traits that will increase with age, the same hatchery EE males have red or orange wings. The female, like normal EE's, does not have such but instead has golden brown and black markings all over, and on occasion, can have a blackened head.

You have such gorgeous birds...

The pictures of Oreo feeding the hens are so cool.

Also like the polish crosses.  Homemade crosses are so interesting, I could just look at pictures all day.  Fun!

Chickens include 1 Light Brahma rooster, 10 Brahma hens, 11 EE hens, 4 Black Australorp hens, and currently hatching out brahma X EE chicks.  I also enjoy sheep, a great dane, barn cats, beehives, and organic gardening.
