Will Eating a Whole Mouse Hurt a Hen?

Quote:
I've seen them do it, but rats are smart and big, so they are harder for them to catch. Plus if you get a colony of them, they will work together like wolves to bring down chickens.

I have posted this video before and it is not for the squeamish but the whole dog chasing chicken, chicken chasing mouse thing is pretty funny.

We use a live trap and move the mice out of the barn. One day my chickens discovered this "treat". It still give me the hebee-gebee's but I suppose it is a circle of life thing.

Here is the link (I think you have to copy and paste):

she'll be fine, my chickens eat frogs, mice, snakes, other birds all the time. All it does to them is give them more protein. mine are free-range so thats why they get all this stuff

You only have to watch a chicken chase down and eat a mouse once to start thinking that whole "birds evolved from dinosaurs" thing is legit. If they weighed 150 pounds they'd give us humans a run for our money as the apex predator.

My girls love mice. I set the live box traps in the barn and give what is caught to the girls. I just gave one to my Black Sexlink hen Peanut and she swallowed it up. There was about a half inch of mouse tail sticking out and one of my Australorp hens grabbed it and pulled the mouse out of Peanuts throat. She pulled so hard that when the mouse came out, it went flying across the yard. One of the Americauna hens grabbed it and the chase was on. Peanut got her prize back in the end and there was no hesitation in swallowing it this time; I think she learned a valuable lesson.
