You have a  dark brahma pair up front there cool!

You can tell the male from the female chicks when they start to feather out and they have the most diffrence between the hen and rooster coloring smile

I want a dark brahma  hen!

Wow! I didn't realize that untill you put them together like this and pointed it out to me! thank you! I might have to isolate them and let em make more brahmas!

She looks clean legged in the other pictures??? any way I like the  brahmas, the babies are butt ugly growing up lol but cute striped chicks with fuzzy legs!

Your little hens are my favorites

Yes, it is frostbite but it appears to be surface damage. They were out in the snow...I don't think he'll lose any comb but he is getting vasolined up, and they are all recovering nicely. I had to grease everybody!

Sounds like she's in good hands wink

I am glad you took on this project

smile

Aww  shucks I bet any of you guys would have done the same thing..

They are real sweet, friendly little birds..The skittish one is actually the biggest roo, he is the black and silver roo with crooked toes. The scales look raised so I think me may have scaly leg mites so the whole flock is getting greased up. I tried to take pictures of every one of them, but chickens don't pose and I took as many as I could, and sorted out the best ones. Anyway, so here we are in no particular order:
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240013.jpg
The gunmetal hen, she is pigeon-sized! So very friendly, eats out of hand. Again I wonder if they were pets, or so hungry fear was non-existent. Named her Little Bit.

The little buff hen, Buffy. She is really friendly, too. Name, Buffy!
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240017.jpg
Mille fluer hen. She is very tiny, but not as small as Little Bit. A little more wary, and all the roo's favorite. She has fluffy cheeks and feathery feets. Her name is Millie.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240016.jpg
A cute splash banty, not sure what she is but she is a cutie. Bigger hen, named her Puff.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240025.jpg
Named him Sparks. This is a single comb roo, he is the most flighty of all of them.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240008.jpg
Light grey hen with feathery feets. She and another hen look almost identicle.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240012.jpg
Big red roo. He is the biggest. He loves Millie and pecks all the other roos. He is Big Red.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240009.jpg
Smaller of the two red roos, more red. Small Red is his name.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240004.jpg
Big silver roo. He is the one with crooked toes. Silver is his name.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/44235_pc240033.jpg
The two orange roos drinking. The rosecomb is the fellow that we thought was a hen until he started crowing. I didn't get everyone's pic because they were going everywhere. Especially since I brought food out. They were already stuffed so I didn't offer them much but they loved my offerings! All in all, a great bunch of tiny birds. I'm glad to have them.

The one with the longer sickles feathers and the single comb is NOT hen-feathered. If you were to show him he would be DQed, but the other one is hen-feathered. That would explain why you might not have been able to know his gender until he crowed. Female Sebrights' combs are very small compared to the males.

What a wonderful story for Christmas, Overeasyplz. People like you and Technodoll restore my faith in people.

I can't quite wrap my mind around that farmer, though. My grandfather was a farmer. His animals were his living. They weren't pets and he wasn't sentimental about them, but I can't conceive of him doing something like not feeding them. He would have sold them, given them away, or culled them rather than leave them to starve. Part of his professional self-respect was tied up in how he treated his animals, even the barn cats.

What pretty Banties!!! I love Banties but hearing the Banty roosters crow hurts my ears. Other than that I think that they're pretty.

Well his income is potatoes, really. I am not sure if the chickens were his or his kids'. But the fact remains that none of them wanted to deal with these po' little birds..I'm glad I asked after them. A trend I see a lot of in SE Idaho is animal neglect...Not too common but it is there..
My friend is very preachy on the bible. She has told me that God gave man dominion over the animals, so man can treat them the way they see fit, they are lesser beings without souls. I cannot subscribe to that kind of philosophy. I don't want to lock this thread so i'll say no more. (but she defends the farmer..roll )

People used to widely believe something similar in relation to women, children and dark-skinned people, too. sickbyc I guess we just have to hope humans will continue their slow social evolution, huh? Vive la vanguard! (Yay, Overeasyplz! Yay, Technodoll!)
