Serama Information Needed

I am hoping to get into Seramas when the new year comes. I have been doing some research and I feel like that Seramas would be a good breed for me. I would only start out with a small trio at first, then maybe when summer arrives, I may hatch a few here and there. I have a plan, but I would like more information that I couldn't quite find searching around on the internet. So I thought that some people here on BYC would help me out by answering a couple of my questions...

1: How much square footage does a trio of seramas need?
2: How much feed does a trio go through in about a month?
3: How many eggs would you expect from a healthy Serama hen? Size of the egg?
4: What would be a good housing idea for a trio of Seramas?

I am hoping to make a record/data book of my future trio of Seramas for breeding purposes. I think it would be handy to have something with the history of each bird. But I love to plan and to make schedules anyways.

And I would also love to hear any experiences they have had with owning Seramas. Even sharing pictures maybe?

this is the official message board for the serama council of north america
i would become a member there and post your questions there, you will meet alot of educated people who are dedicated to these birds, and you will also find alot of breeders that sell actual quality birds
i have learned so much there and you are in a great position since you have not bought birds yet, most people buy junk and then learn what a serama should be like, but by then they stuck with the birds they have

I started out with a quad of seramas 2 years ago. The quad was housed indoors in a 5ftL by 3 ftW by 3 ft high box I built for them with no problems and plenty of room to move around. Their eggs when they first start laying will be a little bigger then a quarter but will gradually get a little bigger but not much. As long as you have a good feeder that they can't get into to kick all the feed out a 50 lb bag will last quite awhile. The hens are super broody so they lay for about 2 weeks then seem to go broody. They lay great when they are laying but mine seem to be super comfy and always wanting to hatch out babies. They are excellent mothers. The breed in general are sooo laid back and sweet. The more time you spend with them the more tame they become. I'd reccomend starting out with some chicks so you can hand raise them. My experience with buying adult birds from other breeders hasn't been the greatest and the birds have been fleighty and do not like to be handled at all. I think if you housed them outside during the warm months a dog house with a little run would be sufficient for a trio.

Your welcome The eggs are hard to hatch (in an incubator) at least for me. I have tried multiple times to hatch in an incubator with no luck whatsoever. I use my broody hens to do the serama hatching for me now. I am sure some folks have had better luck then I have. Good luck with your serama adventure, I am sure you will fall head over heels for them like alot of us have

1: How much square footage does a trio of seramas need?

A trio can live happily in a 3x2 pen with plenty of room to move! Thats what mine are housed in I accually have a quad in a 3x2 pen!

2: How much feed does a trio go through in about a month?

A trio will usually go through two cups(pellets) in a day and a cup and a half of mash in a day! They will waste some here and there! So your looking at about 10 to 15 pounds of feed a month give or take a little!

3: How many eggs would you expect from a healthy Serama hen? Size of the egg?

an average serama will never lay every day(not to say they cant, Bigger classes can!)! usually every other day is average for a pullet then every three days for a hen!

4: What would be a good housing idea for a trio of Seramas?

a boxed in area 2x3 with wood bottom and sides and top with the front wire! 1x1 door cut out of wire is what all my breeders are kept in I keep 1 to 2 inches of pine shavings in with them that is changed every week and I get what I can out everyday!
