I'm also thinking of getting turkeys and think the chicken coop might be too small for chickens and turkeys. These plans look very nice, but I have a question before I build. Do you have to worry about nighttime critters getting your turkeys? We have possums and an occasional raccoon. Would the turkeys be safe with just the roosts? Can't the predators climb up to get them? Our yard is fenced against dogs and big critters, but it seems like the smaller ones have no trouble climbing a six foot fence!
My turkeys completely free range. We have possums, coons, bobcats, coyotes, etc., and our pond is probably a big draw for them, but we very rarely have a problem. We have three Great Pyrs and a black lab that is better at predator control than any of the Pyrs. We have surrounded our property with electric fencing on the inside of conventional fencing running at 3 joules and 15,000 volts.
But we will be moving the turkeys to a different area where they are likely to be more vulnerable, so we will begin using electric poultry netting in conjunction with the movable roost.
