The Wyandotte Thread - Page 501

I do not have much experience.  I am still a novice chicken owner, and only had 2 Golden Lace Wyandottes.  My experience though is that ours are not stand off ish, but they are very docile, and tend to be at the bottom of the pecking order.   They keep their distance unless they are comfortable with you.  I can catch mine with treats.  They are very sweet, and very quiet.

As far as the eggs.  Out of the 6 hens we have (2 Astralorps, 1 Buff O, 1 Aussie mix, and 2 GLW) my 2 Dottes were the slowest ones to mature and start laying.  But now they are laying beautifully. Their eggs are large, and I am getting almost an egg a day from them two.  

Just give them lots of love, lots of treats, and let them get used to you and I am sure you will be very happy with Wyandottes.

We've found this breed to we very friendly and have very good egg production. We raise 4 different colors of this breed(LF) and 2 in the bantams-not a single mean bone in any of them. They lay pretty much every day and it's a nice ex-large egg. And the non-frostbite comb is NICE!

Angela - glad to send you some eggs for her.  I don't know if I have any great birds, but they are high quality and Im glad to share with a 4H kid.   PM me if you're interested

I currently have 1 GLW.  I LOVE her so much.  And I would like to get more.  However, my daughter's 4H project is chickens. which means that we will be showing some.  None of our 4 hens are show quality.  I can only get 2 more hens since we live in city limits.  And I do not know any good Dotte breeders in this area. The man I bought our hens from raises them for eggs, and he has a mix of breeds running in the same flock.  Where do I start looking for good quality hens to purchase?  And is there a specific place I need to look to get standards that I need to look for?

I have hatchery SLW and breeder SLW and they are both shy. I am comparing them to my orps, who will jump up on my lap and are always underfoot, so it might not be a fair comparison. The SLW aren't flighty or mean, they just don't run up and grab food out of your hands like my orps will. I actually find it more rewarding when my SLW eat from my hand because I feel like I've earned their trust. They don't like for me to hold them, but don't thrash or go crazy when I do. They just look for the first opportunity to get away.

My birds' attitude kind of works for them, you know? They're beautiful and regal, like they know they are the poultry yard royalty. :)

That would be great.  Do you only have SLW? or do you have others?

I also have Buff Orpingtons.  I'll post some pictures on that thread later tonight if you'd like to see them.  I only have two Buff Orps laying at this time...so I only get about 6 - 8 eggs each week.  Same with the SLWs.  I'm glad to send her what I can collect in a week.

     New to this site.  I raise vegetables for the local farmers market and would like to sell eggs there as well.  I have decided on wyandottes as a breed and have chicks on order from Welp and ideal hatcheries.  Most of my initial questions you guys have already answered digging through past forums.  So I would like to say thank you for those who have helped me already, and ask patience for the questions I may have in the future.
