The Wyandotte Thread - Page 546

To start with, I am far from a breeder, but I am working on my own flock of BLRW, so I am learning too.

All three colors are Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. There can be a blue, black or splash. The red on the black should be much darker than the gold in a GLW.

As far as #2, I think roo.

1) The breeder I bought chicks from had her BLR Wyandottes advertised the following way:
"BLUE LACED RED WYANDOTTES: These birds are very beautiful with their blue/red laced feathers. I have several bloodlines including Foley, Paul, and Valentine. They are excellent layers of light brown eggs."

Two of the 4 BLRW I bought from her are blue and two are more black laced...do I call the dark ones blue laced red still or are they black laced?  It seems silly when I type it out, but I'm curious if they are genotypically (or just phenotypically) the same as a GLW or black laced red or something else.

Here is one dark one (too bad it has a single comb and is probably a roo since I can't keep roos here) I love the green iridescence:

2) Hen or roo?  This is the second dark laced bird.  It's 2 months old and seems dominant in the flock of 15 hatchmates, but likes to snuggle on my lap if I sit and watch them.  2 of the other BLRW also have combs and waddles, but have small, more upright fluffs for tails and were slow to feather so I'm assuming their longer roo tail feathers will come in sometime soon.  This one pictured has a hen-like tail (from the little I know about it! LOL) so I'm curious if it could be a hen after all.

ETA: this bird is also in my avatar showing it's blueish underfluff (technical term?) and posing with one of the lighter chicks that I think is a hen

Thank you!

So do I just call them BLR? or black BLR? or Blue Black Laced Red?  oy!  I have a blue splash Marans that I've been calling as such, but I'm not sure on the terms within the blues.

I think all three I posted are roos...which is a bummer 'cause they're so pretty, but is OK 'cause I have enough hens.

This is EXACTLY what I needed to know!  Thank you, Donna.

Wait, I thought of one more question: one of the darker laced ______ red wyandottes has blue/grey down underneath...does that qualify him as a blue laced red just on the dark end of the blue spectrum?

Yes, if it's really truly blue down.  Blue is a dilution gene.  Meaning it dilutes any and all black pigment on a bird to "blue."  It is impossible to have a black bird with blue feathers, even down feathers (unless we're talking about a chimera, but that's a whole 'nother ballpark of weirdness and very rare).  It is, however, possible to have a blue that is so dark that it appears black, especially when not viewed directly next to a black bird for comparison.  There are a few cases I've heard of here on BYC where people have gotten a splash chick from a blue to "black" breeding or a blue chick from a black to "black" breeding because they had a blue that was so dark they mistook it for black.

Here are a few pictures of my BLRWs. I have at least one of each color, and a couple from really nice lines. I hope to hatch a few out in the next few weeks to see what I will get.

Blue hen and Splash hen. The Splash Rooster in the background has nice colors, but a single comb. Looking for him a new home.
