is he a coronation roo??? I LOVE him!!! Sussex are one of my fav breeds! I am looking at getting some lavender and coronation sussex to go with my spangled ones I have nowI will prob have to wait till spring...unles some $$$ comes in and I can get a bator this fall hehe dont tell DH  I told him no more till next year....whatcha gonna do...my chicken math tells me I need more NOW! hehe

What are spangled Sussex?  Wait not sure if I want to know......okay yep I do!  I have 3 hatchery speckled sussex and they are some of the nicest birds I have!

oops! I meant speckled! Sorry! Yes, mine are as well! They are all very tame and a few will come right in the house! and they never peck on anyone and dont get pecked on by anyone :) and they are gorgeous!!! mine are still young and I cannot wait to see them after a molt or two

Sadly, I lost two of my coronation hens last week during our 20 day stretch of 100+ degree weather.  Even with fans and other cooling measures, they were found dead. Anyone else lose any of the "heavy" breed birds????

Stupid question, I know.  But I keep finding out that there are just so many things that I didn't even know that I didn't know......

I have 2 speckled sussex.  They are wonderful little girls who are curious and friendly and smart!  But I can't tell them apart.  Is there any 'tricks' to identifying them?  I'm asking because with other animals, the more familiar you are with the breed, the easier it is to spot individuals.  For instance, a row of black labs may all look exactly alike to me - but to someone who knows what to look for, the differences may be huge.

So - is there something I should be paying attention to to tell them apart? 

OR - can I safely use a small zip tie as a leg band on one of them?

Not stupid at all. Yes, use a zip tie. Juat check as they grow to see it's not to tight...replace as needed with bigger tie.

A split bird looks just like a Light Sussex (black hackles and tail) and they recessively carry the Lav gene.

Thanks! I just assumed that he is a split because he hatched from eggs that were supposed to be Light Sussex. I'm not upset at all that he is Coro though.

LOL Thought there was another kind I had to run out and get LOL!!!!  Mine are young also, only 10 weeks.  The other breeds I have in the young group run from me, like I am going to kill them but the Sussex and the White Plymouth Rocks run to me.  I really like them, however, I bought them as pullets and I think one of the Rocks and one of the Sussex are roos I already have 3 roos so I can't have anymore no matter how nice and funny and sweet they are.
