Has anyone else noticed chicken scratch price going up in your area? At our Co-op it has gone up $2 for 50 lbs. in the last 3 mos.

Yes, it is the price of corn. It went up $1/50lbs here. The same with the layer feed. I upped the price of my eggs to cover the cost. Hated to do it but it was necessary.

Devora, is that cheaper than buying scratch, or do you just mix your own because you know it's better? I have mixed my own when I had some old wheat berries given to me (it was definitely cheaper then!) but when I price the grains separately, it is cheaper to buy the scratch in my area. I just used the wheat, cracked corn, and a little flax that I had on hand. What is your recipe?

Sorry I didn't respond right away. We have satellite internet and if a storm comes in (heard of any storms in California lately?) we have no net access. Ugh!

I do not know if it is cheaper b/c we only have five birds so never really count the cost. These lil' buggers may be bleeding us dry for all I know. I like to throw the scratch together at home b/c it has less cracked corn this way. Milo, oats (whole), BOSS, wheat, and cracked corn. I do the flas separately in yoghurt b/c mine won't eat it by itself.

Is this cheaper? Goodness knows! But it is fun.

As of our latest trip to the feed store last week, laying mash crumbles were $7.50 per 50 pound bag and scratch was $7.10. I am curious as to how this compares with other areas of the country. We also feed alfalfa hay every day as well as table scraps. And yes, we have had to raise the price of our eggs...we just have a few customers.

Incidentally, we are averaging 12.4 eggs per day since January 1st with 34 hens. I know that production varies with geography, daylight hours, etc., but how does this compare with you guys and gals?

I paid $10.49 here for 50 lbs layer last week and cracked corn is the same, went up 50 cents. ALL the grains went up, poultry, horse, cow doesn't matter, everything has gone up and all brands too.
Shavings for the horse stalls just went up to $6.00 a bag and I have never in my life paid that for them. Grassy hay is $8.25 a bale and Timothy is up to $7.75. At least we can get it.
I know many that are having to downsize or give it up because they can no longer afford it, depending on how many animals they have.

Your prices are alittle higher than mine Standard. I bought a bale of alfalfa also and it was up a dollar, now it's $13.50 for a big bale. lasts me alonf time though. My scratch feed has cracked corn and wheat kernels in it, I don't buy just the cracked corn so the only comparative I have on that is the $5.00 (approx. can't remember exactly cause I didnt buy it) a 25lb bag I see at foodlion. I buy the black oil sunflower seeds for 40cents a pound and the crushed oyster shell for 16cents apound. My layer mash/crumble, losoe instead of pellets was $4.89 for 25 lbs. I am afraid to give my chickens hay after reading all the impaction posts on here so I don't buy that.
