Long Island here - Western Suffolk, south shore, specifically ... Lindenhurst.

We can have as many chickens as we want in this village.

Just have to use common sense and courtesy.

Been keeping chickens since 1972.

I have 17 hens and one rooster.

I keep an ongoing "chicken thread" over at

http://forums.online-sweepstakes.com/showthread.php?t=397415

... spreading the word to those who don't yet know they can't live without chickens and helping those who do.

Its nice to know there are places on long Island that roosters are allowed. I' m in the town of brookhaven, and no rooster allowed, and max amount of chicken is 6. Thats why I;m looking to move.

As long as my neighbors are OK with it, it's allowed.

I have a gallant rooster - he doesn't crow at all during the night. In the morning, he crows a dozen times on the half hour once the sun comes up and then he is quiet all day ... usually.  If someone pulls into our driveway he will crow, but that's about it.

Most of my immediate neighbors are senior citizens and love having a flock nearby.  Besides, they tend to get up earlier than my Russell and probably don't hear too well either.

Those younger families with children seem to enjoy trying to make the rooster crow, by crowing to him.  It's a lot of fun to listen to.

I think the main thing is ... I have very good relationships with my neighbors and I have a "quiet" rooster.

One of my neighbors has sheep, rabbits, ducks and chickens.  He has a "new" neighbor and when he had a rooster, that neighbor called about the noise and he's had to get rid of it.

But it is allowed in the lovely Village of Lindenhurst.

The village code basically addresses herding of livestock and butchering, and mentions there are no restrictions on chickens/poultry.  I find it impressive in that they understand poultry are not livestock.  Some areas are confused about that in this country.  It's very simple ... all one has to do is be able to count to four.

I'm looking for turkeys for spring, too. I'd like to get some locally. Let me know if you find a source and I'll do the same.
I lived in Pennelville, briefly, as a child.
