Crele?

Hi all -

Can anyone tell me the genetics behind "crele"? Barring over what color?

Or better yet, breeding "what" to "what" would produce crele offspring? Seems to me I read where it was barring over BBR - but when I put those two into the genetics calculator, it doesn't give me crele.

A true crele is a partridge or a light brown with the barring gene B added.

But not the common US partridge (pencilled). I have gotten crele birds by crossing barred roosters with black breasted red or light brown hens. I dont think it is considered true crele but it looks like crele.

I've always been told that true crele is BBR plus barring: e+/e+ B/B or B/-

Can the roo be BBR over a barred hen? Or does that change the outcome?

How about wheaten plus barring? Would you just call this golden cuckoo, or what? I have a cockerel that came from a breeder who had golden cuckoos, wheatens, and BCs. Its hatch down was yellow, but it is barred now. Not sure what to call him!

when Henk said partridge the color he was referring to was what we call b.b. red in the U.S.

Crele is an autosexing bird that can be made following this guide, substitute Barred Rock with a Cuckoo or barred bird of choice ( this depends on the breed you are wanting to make ie hardfeather Cuckoo OEG, softfeather BRock,Cuckoo Leghorn etc) and substitute Brown Leghorn for Partridge OEG,Welsummer or Light Brown Leghorn etc.

In OEG the darker heterozygous male e+/e+ B/b+ are shown as Crele, as are the hens. The lighter homozygous e+/e+ B/B males are called Mackerels, there are no light Mackerel hens, as all hens are hemizygous e+/e+ B/-.
Silver Crele can be made using a Silver Duckwing hen.

Catlin (1991) describes how he made his own strain of Creles by crossing two Crele males with two unrelated Black Breasted Red females. From the mating all the sons were dark
(intermediate) Creles and all the daughters pure Creles. By crossing first generation males and females he extracted some pure Crele males to go with the pure Crele females already obtained.

Intermediate
In genetic term an "intermediate" male is heterozygous for barring (Bb). Females carry but one sex chromosome so a B- female would be called hemizygous; a BB (Black Breasted) male would be homozygous for barring.
