anyone live in Pa

Just thought I would add myself to the ever-growing list of Pennsylvania chicken lovers

We have had our first ever chickens (ornamental layer collection-bought from McMurray) and ducks (from TSC) for 9 1/2 weeks and added 6 others purchased from peachick a few weeks ago. I am loving them all!

We have their coop and 20x30 run done finally and are currently working on building a separate house for our 3 ducks.

I am still searching for a few more pullets to add to my pet flock.... Mille Fleur, Blue Cochin, Sumatra or dark EE'rs/Ameraucana, Faverolle, Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex and a Frizzle or two. I would love any or all of the breeds listed, specially the Mille Fleur. I might have to wait til next spring and put in an early sexed order to a hatchery, if I cant find some local breeders.

Good luck to everyone!

Welcome Solarical. I used to live in Greencastle many moons ago. Still have friends out in Mercersburg.

Have you thought of hatching some eggs? I got a nice mix from bugladyleah (she is outside of Pittsburgh). We put half under a broody hen and incubated the other half. She has EEs, Japs, mille, silkies, frizzle cochins.

Here are some that we incubated:

Here you can see the 'white' ones the black hen hatched:

I have seriously thought about it, simply because I think I could get more of the varieties I would like that way.

I have a few reservations...I'm not sure how to even go about hatching eggs and I would be in trouble if I ended up with a bunch of roos. I am still tossing the idea around though, I do love a challenge lol.

Thanks for posting your pics!

Here in Harmony, Butler County, about 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh.

New farm, new life, new to poultry.

We have 15 pullets from McMurray (EE's, buff Orps, New Hamps, Delawares, silver-laced Wyandottes), born 7/5/08, and the super-secret mystery chick from the order we split with our friends -- a silver-spangled Hamburg probably roo named Henery Hawk.

I really, really want some guineas. Cannot find them locally for love nor money.

Next year I'd like to raise a flock of meat birds, and also get some khaki Campbell ducks.

Anyone going to the Butler Farm show beginning of next month?

I know there are BYCer's in my area (Berks County), I wanted to pass on some info I learned doing research into raising broilers.

There is a local farmer that will butcher chickens for $1.40/per bird. PM me if you would like the contact info.
