Red vs white heat lamps for brooders

Everyone is saying red 250watt.... Why??? does it make that much difference??? I set my brooder up with a regular 150 watt flood light on a dimmer and only have it turned half way on. Chicks seem very happy and comfortable... Am I missing something?

I think it depends on the temp of the room they are in. If it is warmer then a lower wattage will usually work.
I noticed a huge difference between the red and white lights with my day olds. With the red they were calm and mellow. I tried switching to a lower wattage bulb that happened to be white because the room was so warm. The temps were good but the chicks immediately noticed the little colored patterns on the paper towels they were standing on and then started pecking them. Then that led to pecking each others toes, and the little white tips on each other's beaks, then just pecking each other in general. They were doing it hard making each other cry. That was the end of the white light. I put the red one back in and raised it up and they all went back to loving each other again lol.

The red light helps keep down cannibalism
Especially in quail
It really doesn't matter on the wattage other than if you are using the light for heat also.
You will have very noticeable aggression traits with white lights you don't see with red

Red at whatever wattage you need to keep them happy.

Since I brooded in late spring last year, mine went to a white 100W after about 4 weeks and I kinda had them on a "backward" light schedule, lighting them at night for the heat, and having it dark during the day (they were in a dark garage) when the temperature took care of itself. They weren't overlighted and they had plenty of space, so they didn't pick. The transition to having them in the same time zone as the rest of us was a little wonky, but it didn't seem to hurt them

Mine is gonna be outside under a canopy of course it stays dry but I live in south Georgia so its 90,to 102 outside what bulb is suggested for those conditions
